Why does Pakistan have zero GMs in chess ?
India has 64 , 4th highest in the world.
Bangladesh has 5

I play on chess.com and many Pakistanis are registered their. But seems no Pakistani has gone over IM level.

Its a excellent game with a rising profile and very accessible.

Maybe some Pakistanis can enumerate the reasons ?

Maybe not many see it as a career to persue instead of just a passion to fulfill. Even here it's pretty rare for anyone to actively persue it, although chess championships at school levels exist, so there is a structure available for those who would be interested in it and want to go further.

Here in our region careers followed due to passion are low if they aren't seen as glamorous or profitable. I'd say school level encouragement would be a key criteria to increase the number of players who do it professionally.

. . . . . .
chess just isnt that popular in Pakistan. i dont have any friends who played it enough to even remember the rules of the game. their families dont play it. in my family only my mother's father played it till the day he died. when i was a kid my father always scolded me whenever he caught me playing chess (even card games) and said this sort of thing is the reason the Muslims lost India to the British, and that it is a waste of time.

You have a Pakistani flag ?
Origin of chess is in India from the 6th century. Nothing to do with the middle east .

North India is the origin of the game supposedly. in an undivided India, Pakistan would be considered part of North India.

May be it’s banned due to religious reasons.

.
Some scholars used to regard chess as "unislamic" or "unwanted western influence" - not sure if it's still the case.

i dont think there is anything in islam that says its haram to play chess.

the game became famous among muslims when Persia was conquered since they played it a lot too after it was 'exported' to Persia
