My issue is that my education has been in a very English speaking environment, but we spoke in Urdu at home, lekin woh iss tarhan ki hoti hai where I just mix up meray Urdu ke jumlay, English ke saath.

Along with English, French is also considered to be an official language in Canada. (just in case you did not know...)

I know that.

It seems he barely knows French. Even I can pull up a few sentences of my barely-passable Spanish & say I know Spanish, si, senor(a)?

Why am I attempting to learn urdu is an interesting question. Long story short, as one gets older, culture become something important and I mean learning urdu will help get close to my other side of culture plus helps when talking to customer support. Believe me learning urdu or hindi saves you alot of time when you have to talk to let say Mr jamal in new dehli about cell phone bills plus my gramps speaks urdu. As far as french goes, man I wish i wasn't born in quebec sometimes so i could speak proper anglais like the rest of the world, lord why on earth he moved from pakistan to the one part of canada that spoke a different language altogether ai yar(urdu :azn:)

are you part french by genetics by any chance?

This thread reminded me of a joke.

Am american visits Pakistan and travels up north to murree. Whilst there is checks in at a cheap hotel and decides to grab some lunch. When he walks to the restaurant, he sees the menu with all the pictures of the colourful and interesting looking food. So he orders some rice and a kebab.

The waiter, comes back with his order and as is custom brings a bowl of riata and salad. The American, perplexed at the bowl of suspicious creamy looking substance, asks the waiter... "Excuse me, but what is this"?

The waiter with his limited English says, it is Riata sir... The American puzzled, repeats the question only this time he slows down his pace and shouts the words slowly... WHAT....IS....THIS.... WHAT....IS...RIATA?

The waiter, pauses, thinks for a moment and replies "KURD", "KURD"... The American increasingly irate snaps back... WHAT....IS....KURD....?

The waiter pauses again, thinks and replied.... Milk sleeps at night, and in the morning go tight... = Kurd.

:P
