"In 1999 Bangladesh has requested to USA for 27 F-16 Block 15 aircraft. At that time USA refused to sell this aircraft to Bangladesh stating that this aircraft was not suitable for Bangladesh.Later Bangladesh decided to buy Mig-29,a competitor of F-16.Bangladesh ordered 16 Mig-29B in 1999 and has plan for further more 16 Mig-29.During this time Bangladesh's political party Awami League was in power. In 2001 election Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) came to power. However after receiving only 8 Mig-29 the government cancelled the order of the remaining 8 Mig-29 and Bangladesh Air Force's further request of more 16 Mig-29.Bangladesh Air Force has a wish of acquiring 32 Mig-29 altogether which was never fulfilled"

I dont get it?!

BD would have been able to afford 32 Mig-29 even more than a decade ago. It is the lack of a decent BD air-force that has emboldened Myanmar to think that it can do want it wants as regards Rohingyas.

With a force of 32 Mig-29, when combined with the superior organisation and training of the BD military, BD would have been a stronger military power then Myanmar now.

BNP is historically anti air force. For example their founder Zia killed thousands of air force officers in cold blood and this hate grew with time.

. .
Its a way to make them vulnerable against any aggression .In modern era an army /Navy loose with out Air force ,So denying them Air force is like inviting any one to take over

.
Besides AF is very expensive. With a decent airforce BD defense budget will double with ease.

.
If you look at BD arms imports from 1996-2015:

Awami League(97-2001) = 679 million dollars
BNP (2002-2007) = 400 million dollars
Awami League(2010-2015 = 2117 million dollars

It is clear that BNP does not like to spend money on buying weapons and just talks about being a nationalist party when it's actions indicate that it is not really.

I would much rather BD had 32 Mig-29s and cut the number of troops by 50,000 to pay for this. No point having a large army that is being mercilessly bombed by the enemy.

Army does not necessarily mean to fight external enemys. You have 16 crore people to rule as well.

BD is not a military state and could easily do with cutting 50,000 troops to channel resources into air-force.

you also forgot to mention that, just after coming to power, BNP renamed BNS Bangabandhu to BNS Khalid bin walid and then decommissioned it.
Can you imagine that ? ! !!

Because it was more than baf could afford. Even those 8 were sitting on the ground all the time due to lack of spares and maintainance after few months of delivery. BAF didn't had the technical capability to maintain double engine aircraft. BAF top brass wasn't happy with the situation.Everytthing was decided by the PM an Air Chief. And due to faulty deal Russians never supplied necessary spares. So after the election BAF grounded those migs and inducted 16 f7 bg and ordered 16 more.

And it was proved in a court during the Mig 29 corruption case that the deal was indeed faulty and was signed against the best interest of BAF.And the country lost valuable money.

Also do I have to remind everyone how low the foreign reserve was? 32 is something we can afford now, but in 2001 no we couldn't.

it was bought as second hand from Russian reserve, costed $7million each.

This was indeed a treason. The best ship decommissioned only due to political reason.

I dont think so. We still need more military while our police and paramilitary forces grow.

The Mig29 was faulty deal but it was urgent call, remember Bangladesh lost huge amount of fighter planes + helicopters during 1990 storm ? (40+) ? to get back BAF some feet, it was bought

Navy is getting primary focus and it should be as our economy export based and sea rout is main channel

.
My question to BD brothers ,Why recently focus is on Light weight or trainer`s .J10 fits perfectly for BD as well as JH7 for maritime security .Else options are SU 30 /27 derivations but why Govt is not focusing on this ? other than hanging
