Why are people so mean to each other online? - BBC News
Why are people so mean to each other online?

They way we communicate online jumped back into the headlines last week when Monica Lewinsky, famous for her love affair with President Clinton, spoke at the Ted (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference in Vancouver.

Describing herself as one of the first victims of cyber-gossip, she said that it had taken her over a decade to get over it. Now back in the public eye, she called for a more compassionate internet.

Community spirit?
We have all seen nasty comments online - whether they be a row on Twitter or a catty response on Facebook.

The internet acts like a kind of digital-fuelled alcohol, freeing us to say things to strangers that we would never dare to say if we met them.

Dave Harte, a lecturer in media communication at Birmingham City University, believes that social media gives us a connection with each other that we are all craving.

"We have a vague sense of having lost something - the idea of chatting to a neighbour or meeting at the village post office. In many ways it is a media-created perception. Maybe we have all watched too many episodes of 'Call the Midwife'," he said.

"But we are always trying to retrieve it and having a digital presence can often seem like a trouble-free replacement for meeting each other."

Even back in the early days of the internet, online chat could very easily turn sour.

"Discussions in these groups would have followed a similar pattern. People with shared interests come together but often they would disintegrate because the internet gives people the opportunity to say things that you wouldn't say face to face," said Mr Harte.

Heartbreaking comments

Trolling has become an established term for people who sow discord on the internet by starting arguments - and there are a lot of them around.

Women seem to be particularly prone - a survey conducted by cosmetics firm Dove and Twitter found that in 2014 over five million negative tweets were posted about beauty and body image - and four out of five of them appeared to come from women.

Danah Boyd, principal researcher at Microsoft Research and a recognised expert on how we use social media, commented in a recent blog: "Over the last few years, as the internet went from being a geeky subculture to something that is truly mainstream, I started watching as young women used technology to demean themselves and each other. It has broken my heart over and over again."

"It's high time that we all stop and reflect on what we're saying and posting when we use our fingers to talk in public," she concluded.

Because there's no real price to pay for being an azz.

One day we will look back at the Wild West days of the internet and think about the "good ol' days" with nostalgia and fondness.

Cherish it motherfuckers. It won't last forever.

.
and pdf is one of the meanest places on internet.

.
^^^ @jamahir Oh, not even brother! Sadly there are many worst and that's without
going to the dark net where things get unspeakably ugly.

In any case, you can find deprecatory, racist and even violent intent filled comments
on many if not most regular media sites.

Have a good evening buddy, Tay.

People don't feel they have to hide anything. Human are at their real behaviour online. Hiding reality trying to be something they are not. Being cheap mean and full of hate.

But @jamahir pdf is not even close to many other forum.or websites .

@jamahir

Death threats from people who don't have the means to carry them through is but hardcore extreme trolling.
For your question :
Forget Google and the likes, grab Tor or any such secure browser and look for subjects or forums.
I've seen people posting pictures of actual murders they had committed just as an example!
You can access rare infos but also drug markets, child p0rn, assassins, you name it.
I don't condone this of course but for research on some subjects, someone looking for the
truth on many things, terrorist activities etc, needs to go there at times.

If it gets to concern more than 5% of your total Internet time, you may have a problem though?

Be safe if you do, Tay.

true... anonymity seems to bring out hidden evils... off-line, those can potentially be handled by police, so there is hesitation... also, most users of internet forums or facebook/youtube comment sections are young people ( 13 to 25 ) and they do not hesitate in using foul language or aggression because their school and college environments are uncontrolled about language.

note, these same aggressive people would not be politically active in their schools/college/job in a good way, by creating student union or employee union based in socialism.

no, 99.99 percent of these mean, aggressive people in on-line forums have no power and influence on the off-line world... in off-line, they are followers of criminal activity in teen male gangs, religious reactionary groups etc... they may invite someone from on-line to off-line for a fight or they may use internet to propagate their off-line criminality but the mean ones are never the ones who will contribute in good ways to the world.

But @jamahir pdf is not even close to many other forum.or websites .

before pdf, i had been at only two forums, and those were proper socialist forums with mature people... in one of the two, we used the forum for off-line political activities... so i was among dedicated political participants.

Have you ever retaliated against someone for being rude online? When my husband was still active duty, he knocked a few people offline, kept them offline too (he was an electronic warfare specialist with a major focus on SATCOM and EMSEC - there's no military designation for what he did).

Honestly, I'm surprised he tolerates the rampant hatred and moronic behaviors that propagate here. I'd expect a lot of people to be experiencing computer problems. Boy, oh boy, has he grown up a lot.

And you're definitely right, there are parts of the internet much worse than PDF, though it can get bad here too. I've noticed a lot of racist behaviors, nationalism is rampant too. National beefs get played out here all too often.

Retaliated in the sense of acting to limit their access when a user myself as you mentioned, no ma'am.
Then again, I was a moderator on a couple places so that within my functions I did ban people but I trust
in all fairness and respect of the rules that I was tasked to apply.

I worked security of many years IRL after serving myself so that I have learned to be level-headed to a degree.
This said, I am usually a nicer person on Internet than IRL. The temptation is just not there in virtual la-la-land.
If I have problems staying cool, I'd rather leave a digital venue than endure the aggravation.

On the street, I'm still liable to manhandle your azz for huh, say practical purposes? o_O

If I believed fully that someone was a danger though, I would not hesitate to report them to ISP or authorities
but I'd need some proof to reach that level of certainty.

Tay.
