Okay which major country in South Asia do you think will become the first fully developed country? Vote and then post why you made the choice.

This might come as a surprise but I voted Bangladesh. I am rather prejudiced when it comes to Bangla but a honest assessment should attempt to discard such sentiments. I can't ignore that deep down I am most impressed by the plucky Banglas. From what I can see the country is fast sorting out it's fundamentals. So here are my reasons -

1. Homogenous ethnic based state giving it integrity, unity, cohesivness and stability that rest of South Asia can only dream.

2. A secular order that is not forever stuck in the quicksand of "Matlab Kya" but simply gets on trying build a country that provides decent life for everybody. This engenders a simple business like approach of sorting out real life issues like hunger, poverty, housing, sanitation, schooling, health etc. Leave god, religion, ummah for another day.

3. It has built up a impressive and genuine garment export industry. This has linked large part of Bangla with the western dominated trading system. Millions of Banglas now depend directly on Western buyers purchasing their products. This assures a common mutually beneficial relationship between the Western trading order and millions of ordinary Banglas. This alone reinforces the secular forces in Bangla and as we move forward they will get stronger as more Banglas will become dependant on this export industry which has a umbelical cord attached to the West.

4. The garment industry is introducing a sea change in culture. It is socializing millions of Bangla workers into modern industry and even more importantly most of these are females who will go on to nurture the next generation helping to bring about new social order inside Bangladesh.

5. As we forward the lessons learnt from garment industry will mature and over time Bangla will begin to move up the value chain. For example electronic goods might be next on the list. I can see those huge factories pouring out shirts moving up to manufacturing TVs etc.

The country will see increasing stability as millions of workers in Bangla know their living depends on keeping markets in the West sweet. This alone assures a huge internal mandate against Islamists. All stakeholders, government, business, employees, media know they all have to remain on the same page, paddle in same direction to keep those markets in West buying from them or it will be hunger time again. So the future is bright for Bangladesh. And I wish it the best. There is something deeply satisfying in seeing people raise temselves out of poverty and adversity through hardwork and grit.

You started with zero and your well on the way to becoming the hero. Well done Bangladesh.

Actually the answer is Sri Lanka all their macro economic indicators says so . Then India if anyone else ever in south Asia joins . Bangladesh is not there because of limits of growth model will forever be a curse on Bangladesh. Bangladesh has less resources and very vulnerable to Climate change and being surrounded by India on 3 sides any hostile relationship with India will forever stunt its growth.

Personally only Sri Lanka will get there no one else.

Maldives.
That country has less people than a Mumbai slum. Do you know what "major country" means? That is why I listed only three.

Okay which major country in South Asia

And for rest of you note again - Major Country.

Ps. Sri Lanka as about same population as large South Asian city like Mumbai.

. .
Sri Lanka has 20 million people.Nepal has almost 30 million.

Why is there no none of the above option ?? Because no other South Asian country will be a developed country. Bangladesh doesn't have the resource nor the manufacturing capability .
India will have pockets which will be highly developed rest backward . India has inequality problem and a huge population . India already has 3rd largest amount of billionaires. Though Indian economy will easily be the 3rd largest in the world from 2025 onwards.

Yeah you're shockingly prejudiced, and often irresponsibly off the wall. But an intelligent, nice guy,

However. I agree. Bangladesh probably. India, I hope.

But if you leave out the 'major' country criteria, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan are already up there in terms of first world attitudes, and I'd guess Bhutan followed by Lanka would be closest in all senses of the term,

Almost all mighty empires and dominant states were actually very diverse, but managed to unite themselves; usually through force.

The British Isles for example, at one time had hundreds of different ethnic groups, tribes and languages similar to Pakistan.

2 billion people with consumption like western consumer ? I can't imagine that.
First we are talking about Bangladesh and secondly your assuming Malthus Theory as absolute. As regards Japan I don't agree but leave that for another day. But some of the most walthiest places are also the most dense in people. It all depends on how those people work. If they all get up in the morning, all paddle in same direction without any friction it will be engine of prosperity like Singapore, HK, Shanghai. If they get up in the morning and fight, argue, kick, scheme, shoot, blow, steal from their fellow citizen then you will have Somalia.

If Pakistan replicate and starts to manage its micro and macro economic policies what the country was doing in the 50's, 60's and later decades, during Musharraf era, then Pakistan cannot be ignored.

Pakistan was the fastest growing Asian, not just south Asian country in the 60's and South Koreans economists used the 10 year M.haq, a Pak economist plan to rejuvenate its economy, in the 60's Pakistan and Singapore had an equal per capita income of about 500 USD, how ironic...

Had vast natural resources, but need to invest in HDI...

I think KPK province Pakistan will be ahead of Punjab in all major HDI indices and it will be a harbinger of growth in Pakistan, check KPK education, health, law and order stats in the new government, and the allocated budget for education and health, huge sea change...

So the winds will blow from north to south, just as all the environmental changes is Pakistan, the mighty river Indus starts from the north...

And as someone has said, KPK has never voted a government second time in power who hasn't performed well, the most hardworking, people there...

Winds of change blowing from the north, few are seeing it....
