Afghans are surely not coherent enough to be a nation-state...Bengali unity keeps Bangladesh as a nation state..Islamic unity keeps Pakistan as a nation state....Indigenous Hindu unity is what keeps India chugging along as a nation state ...The last 10-15 years India has been solving problems faster and dealing with its various drawbacks faster than any other country in South Asia
What about the Tajiks, Kyrgiz? Sierra Leone has an avg IQ of 91. How are they doing? Iraq's IQ is 87 while Iran's is 84. While Iran is much ahead in their indigenous industries. Kyrgiz have an avg IQ of 90. While per capita is much lower than BD, India or Pakistan.

The British certainly helped us, but we were still nowhere near developed when they left. We were poorer than the world's average when the British left in the late 1950s. Literacy is only 52% in 1957 as many adults were illiterate migrants from China, India and Malaysia.

We certainly wouldn't developed today if we just 'continue the age old tradition' of our seaport business during the British times. The entire transport and storage industry makes up only around 8% of our GDP, and that it includes airports, post and courier, warehousing and storage, and other forms of transport. Our largest industry is actually manufacturing which makes up 20% of GDP.

Thank you for providing a much needed insight. I always have been fascinated with the development of Singapore compared with Sri Lanka. But, I believe that the manufacturing you referred are about the Petrolatum products. However what we need to understand here is that without the Singapore harbor the Petroleum industry wouldn't have been a success it enjoys today.

What I really want to emphasize was that Singapore already had a well developed harbor in a strategically located position. I believe that because of this reason the Singapore magic cannot be emulated elsewhere.

Nope. The petroleum industry is only fairly recent and did not participate in our economic boom in the 80s. Electronics is the backbone of our manufacturing then and now.

In 2016, our largest manufacturing establishment by value added (S$m) are:

1)Computer, Electronic & Optical Products
18,063.8

2)Chemicals & Chemical Products
11,845.5

3)Pharmaceutical & Biological Products
11,774.7

...

9) Refined Petroleum Products
1,628.9

It dropped quite alot because of the slump in oil prices.

Singapore's harbor infrastructure was not developed by the British. During the British times, almost every goods are moved manually by illiterate migrants from the region. We built our own cranes, berths etc.

Singapore is strategically located indeed. So is Johor (Malaysia) and Batam (Indonesia).
Egypt and Panama is even better located than us.

Our 'magic' is just export-oriented growth. It's not unique to us. It's also practiced in Japan, the 4 Asian Tigers, China, and now maybe Vietnam.

He has a point. Although as a Capricorn I'd attribute a country's improvement to hard work, strategic planning and mindset rather than IQ or testosterone levels.
