What's new

Where do Bangladesh and Pakistan stand after 50 years of separation?

BD is toiling in the heat & we [Pakistan] are taking an evening nap in an AC room.

guys yall really think we are Afghanistan or something living in huts
don't know where this thinking is coming from but it's not exactly correct -
we don't live in huts guys

our people are also content and happy with our lives (sure we can improve a LOT no doubt)
yall are usually good people when I met yall in person- but your media people are annoying sometimes
too much crap talk when we don't do the same in return nor do we think/treat you as an enemy

Our nation has a lot to achieve and improve and we are the first ones to say it but its not exactly doom and gloom
Pakistan is obviously quite poor and impoverished but not as much as people make it out to be. But sending videos of cities like Lahore and Islamabad and presenting them as if it represents the average lifestyle and city in Pakistan is bit of an overstretch.

Bangladesh is going to outpace pakistan in the near furture. Their investments in Education and women empowerment will pay off big time. Their literacy rate is almost 20% higher than Pakistan now. However there are risks. BD Needs to diversify from Garments exports. They need to start moving up in the manufacturing value chain else they will be out competed by other countries.

Pakistan on the other had has a huge potential but simply unable to solve its internal matters. They struggle from an identity crisis and unsure of what kind of nation they want to build or live in. Its a total mess.
Bangladesh didn't have to suffer from having Afghans as their neighbors and blowing crap up everywhere in their country. Also their government promoting secularism and actively fighting extremism and extremist activities in the country unlike Pakistan helped a lot.

never said we are this or that- if anything we usually stay quiet when it comes to big talk
but I posted stats with it, personal experience of man and Lahore is the second biggest city in the country

but importantly I would never dare to call ourselves some world-beaters, super-duper thing- we have a ton of things to improve on but people genuinely think we are Afghanistan or Yemen and they get surprised when they figure out we are not the same thing

I will be honest I would rather be in Pakistans position then Bangladeshs

Don't let a few years of economic progress under a one party system fool you to the underlying and long term differences in geo strategic strength and planning between the two

Ultimately both countries have a hindutva extremist enemy to deal with next door that we WILL take on one way or the other

The hindus are going into hindutva mode and we are both lucky that we took the partition option, Indian Muslims are stuck and now all three will have to destroy our mutual enemy but ONLY Pakistan has thus far prepared and we have nuclear weapons, Bangladesh hasn't and Indian Muslims the less said the better for the moment but they are inside india

I don't
As a local Pakistani, I can confirm that Pakistani women are now actively participating in national development spectrum. Though their focus is medical field mostly but in engineering field also they are not coming slow.

Sarah Qureshi (cofounder of Aeroengines startup) should be role model for every Pakistani woman.

I know Sarah Qureshi. She was (still is I think) was an Academic at Cranfield, where I did my Ph.D.

Inspiring women, chosen to take on a very male-dominated field of study

I think the author has given less credit to the women role in BD economy due to Khaledia Zia and Sheikh Hasina leading BD. It encourages women to actually see women ruling the country and these both leaders have soft corners for them.

Same in my state of TN. Women's voted enbloc for Jayalalitha. The reason was simple enough. They couldn't get their way with their husbands but were mesmerized to see men's bowing their heads in front of her.

BD are very lucky they didn't have to get involved in geopolitics and can quietly build their country. But to be honest I would have thought more progress would have been made, should be like a Vietnam at the very least.

Pakistans growth we all know has been stunted with regime changes and selections from outside players wrestling for the region. Most of the funds have been into pumped into security. Their nuke program stopped them from gaining ally status from the west, the price had to be paid. At the moment its a fight to get enough space to build the economy. 20 years of peace time and heavy growth could take Pakistan to Malaysia level.

Already happening as regards diversification.

Watch this space for BD exports as regards electronics, pharma and IT.

Already these areas earn many billions in home market and the plan is to also do this export wise this decade.

There’s no comparison between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Pakistan was never at peace since 71
Bangladesh was never at war since 71
Pakistan faces and enemy 8x bigger than it and had to deal with War on Terror and the world being in Afghanistan
Bangladesh has no real enemies and nothing to worry about

Even after all the wars Pakistan had, Pakistans gdp and exports are not much behind Bangladesh. Pakistans economy is largely u documented so the real gdp is probably far higher then Bangladesh

Seriously confused author... derived a bizzare conclusion out of randomly selected comparisons and entirely ignored global geopolitics and its impact on the region

Doubt this guy has any clue on politics in either country, to draw comparisons like this.....wow!

We had/has a different kind of meddling, previous rulers of the area saw bdesh as a play ground isi pak Intel services and raw. As they saw it as an out post for them to meddle with.

India constantly meddled with bdesh economic growth and agitated many unrest amongst public.

India constantly protested on the international stage of bdesh buying and building up its military capability. Refer to Submarine debacle and the recent missle servicing and manufacturing Centre.

Bdesh rulers were blackmailed by various state gov donor to do nothing, and got little international help to start with. It was various independent and public organisations set up by many independent public people that planted the seeds for progress. Many of them were bangladeshi origin and also some big individual accomplishments that towards public betterment.

For the past 20-30 yrs bdesh couldn't support to build an independent deep sea port.

Even today there was a lot of meddling between India, jap n u.s.a .

Instead of measuring schwantzes and silly games of one-upman-ship between Bangladesh and Pakistan, what we should do in both countries is work to achieve better futures for our respective populations by looking at complementary technology gaps that can be filled. Mehnat + Opportunity equates money.

IMPROVING LIVING STANDARDS SHOULD BE THE FOCUS. For which you need MONEY.

The culture in both countries are not dissimilar. How difficult will this be to do?

For example - Bangladesh has certain capital and expertise that Pakistan can use and vice versa.

I have been long advocating that appropriate technology sector in Pakistan is way better set up than in Bangladesh and we can have Pakistani technical expertise in that sector brought in with experts and have it replicated here. There should be framework in D-8 communiques that should facilitate this. It can be done informally too.

Certain industries where there is huge demand in Bangladesh (cutleries, Sheetmetal work, heavy machinery production, cookware, sports goods, in fact anything made in Sialkot or Gujranwala areas) can be invested in Bangladesh by Pakistani businessmen right now, without waiting for tax facilities. Pakistani businessmen already have the knowledge of production and setup for these industries. This will be welcomed by the govt. (BIDA) for sure.

Bangladesh is the largest ship-breaker in the globe (probably larger than even Pakistan) - so many engineering items for local use and demand can be made from heavy ship plate like in Pakistan. These heavy items are better made to specs locally, especially if these are bespoke/custom-made items. Ship-breaking is concentrated North of Chittagong - in the Patenga Coastal area. There are wide open areas available for setting up workshops in that coastal village (Sitakund - Bhatiary to Kumira).

Pakistani appropriate technology machinery (lathes, milling machines etc.) should be given special tax rebates and facilities in Bangladesh. That will help Pakistani industry and help Bangladesh set up small cottage industry at a grassroots level. Right now this is a greenfield situation in Bangladesh wide open for exploration. Cottage industry is needed for supplying light engineering sector e.g. motorcycle production. We must become self-sufficient at producing light engineering parts (Quality AND Quantity-wise).

Let's work toward something practical - instead of bickering like children, which only helps our enemies.

Don't follow or pay attention to false flaggers, of which there are too many in this forum.

We should focus on the future for both countries TOGETHER ECONOMICALLY.

OK, let me put it simply:

1. BD wins economically

2. Pakistan wins militarily.
