When 150 Mercedes rolled into Aurangabad

Aurangabad: This could well be the highest valued car deal in India. A group of businessmen has put Aurangabad on the world map by buying a whopping 150 high-end luxury cars in one go. The group wants to put their hometown on the global map.

The Mercedes Benz cars priced at over Rs 65 crore, the highest valued car deal in India. And it's all happening in a small city in the underdeveloped Marathawada region of Maharashtra - Aurangabad.

A group of businessmen, lawyers, doctors and other professionals have come together to change the image of Aurangabad from a backward, sleepy city to an economic hub.

Rishi Darda, MD Lokmat group, said: “We wanted to put Aurangabad on the world map.” Rahul Mishrikotkar, of RHS Ventures, said: “We want to invite all investors and industries to Aurangabad.”

This 'Aurangabad group' -- popularly called so -- made a bulk booking in April, forcing companies to acknowledge the hidden potential in smaller towns and cities in India.

Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India said there is tremendous economic power in tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

These young owners are all set now to get into the driver's seat to showcase Aurangabad as the new hope of Maharashtra.

Aurangabad is a great place.

The Daulatabad fort is easily one of the best designed & constructed forts I have seen. Ajanta & ellora too are great places to visit.

Good food, nice climate even with all the global warming. The Mughals chose well to select this place.

.
Next order maybe from Nagpur then Kanpur then Raipur...........:partay:

It's time for tier 2 and 3 cities to rise!

Actually, there is another "pur" in the reckoning.
Much before Mercedes-Benz started manufacturing in India; the largest number of Mercedes cars (after Bombay) were in Kolhapur - owned by rich farmers ! About 20 years ago, when i was driving back from Bangalore to Bombay, i had a problem and was routed to a garage there. The number of Mercedes cars there seemed quite unusual, so i asked the owner's son. The stats that he gave me seemed unusual, to say the least. And there was no official Mercedes presence in the country then.

What effectively this has contributed is flight of 65 corore to europe when it could have been invested locally in a much effective manner to boost local economy and image..foolish move indeed.

I'm thinking along the same lines also.

I don't know how this lavish and extreme purchase of Mercs changes the infrastructure, the educational facilities, industry, telecommunications etc of Aurangabad.

Am I missing something here?

It has nothing to do with "the infrastructure, the educational facilities, industry, telecommunications etc of Aurangabad."
Its is just about some guys with some money in their pockets who decided to buy the car enbloc[/I].
It is good for MBIL (Mercedes Benz India Ltd.) because it means more cars sold, more Indian jobs will eventually be created and so on.
Since MBIL is an Indian entity, the only money going back to Germany will be royalty and a share of the eventual profits as dividend.
For the new (private) owners, it means some new toys to play with.
Where do the ordinary folks come in ?

You are indeed missing some thing.;)

This shows the economic might of Indians. The hidden wealth, which is ready to be tapped by the companies.
This is an example of one very small unknown town, imagine what potentials there would be for all such towns combined.
This proves the fact that wealth is flowing in all parts of India.
Of course my Pakistani friends will come up with our poverty and toilets, but these guys are self made rich and they deserve the right to spend their money the way they want.
Just like your President or Nawaz Sherrif, its their money they can spend it any way they like. Its not a law that they should donate to the plight of flood victims.

Yea, in Punjab also Mercedes cars are part of the lifestyle game. Ludhiana alone has 700+ Mercedes (2007 Data). :D

Quick question, does MBIL have production facilities in India?

The C-Class and E-Class are assembled locally while others are fully imported from Germany.

Daimler is building a commercial vehicle plant outside of Chennai with an investment of 700 million Euros.

Are you sure about the underlined part? The Mercedes plant in Chakan, Maharashtra is already turning out their Buses (to compete with Volvo) and Actros range of heavy trucks. It is adjacent to the the Volkswagen plant. Saw it on my last visit home.
