Hi,
So just now replaced the front brakes on my Honda Fit---.
Had about 50% life left on the pads---but were making grinding sort of noise---.
Knowledge check quetions
What could cause brake squeal
What could cause very loud brake squeal
What could cause grinding noise---
What could cause brake scraping noise---
Hi
1 & 2. Brake squeal is caused when a mechanic does not put anti squeal compound at the metal edges of the brake pads that touch brake caliper in case of disc brake and the back plate in case of the brake shoes---. Brake dust gathers in those places and creates a low or a high pitched squeal---.
2. A high pitched terrible sounding squeal is also heard at times---. You take the wheels off and check the brake and they look thick enough and you wonder why----. But if you could take the pads out or take the drum of---you will see fracture lines in the brake linings---that will cause a very loud squeal.
3. Brakes pads have worn off and the metal sensor on the brake pad is scraping against the the brake disc---or the brake shoe linings are worn down and the metal is scraping against the inside of the drum----.
4. It often happens in rainy areas---you park your car---you had driven thru puddles in the rain and parked your car for a few day---rust developed on the brake disc and the brake drums---you will hear scraping kind of noise
