feeling sorry for you.......well today was a nice day for me ,i enjoyed my viva in orthopaedics today.Now is the chill time

you know I love Snow and rain but in this season its been 3 months now i have not seen sunny day here in London. The snow was fallen about 10-15 times (major and minor) and on other days it kept raining that is the reason i catch up flue very quickly if i go out in such weather very often.

I can give a try....

For sake of understanding I will name the balls as A, B, C, D, .....M.

Put first 6 balls (A to F) in one side of machine and next 6 balls (G to L) on other side. Leave the 13th one i.e. ball M.

If both are equal....clearly the ball M is the one we are looking for.
If both are not equal, it means either one of side will be heavier. That would be containing the "odd-out" ball. I assume it is in first side i.e. one of the balls from A to F is heavier.

Now out of these 6 balls, place the set of 3 balls on each side of machine and do second round of weighing. Clearly one side will be heavier. I assume it is first three i.e. A to C balls.

Now put ball A in one side and ball B into other side and do last round of measurement.
If both are same.....ball C is the answer.
Else whoever is heavier is the answer. We can apply the same logic for the answer if another set of 6 balls or 3 balls is found heavier.

Hope I answered it. I used to solve these type of problems long long ago when I was preparing for exams.

He hehe Its a simple one, I faced the same exact Q in Maths Olympiad in state level.

Ans is

First take any 12 balls and weigh, 6 each, if both are equal then the left over is the lighter one.

if Not equal then take the lighter set and weigh 3 each ,
take the lighter set take any two and weight, if equal then the left over is lighter or the one you just found out weighing.
