Let me make it simple to understand.

There are three Bangladehis in India: a Muslim, a Hindu and a Christian.

Modi would welcome the Indian, but not the Muslim or the Christian.

The Hindu and Christian and Buddhist and the Scientologist would all be welcome. Not the 5th guy, it's very simple and easy to understand, the 5th guy's ancestors believed that they are separate nation and what not. So the 5th guy deserves a bullet to his head if he tries to set foot in India.

Well, 90% Bangladeshis don't judge people based on religion. Its just 10% of those who can't judge anyone without religion. Infact 90-95% Bangladeshi Muslims don't know much about Islamic history. BDeshis are converted Muslims by Persian Sufis. We don't know about which religion is true but we know that humanity is a true religion. So we practice humanity and Islam both.

Not all Bangladeshis are converted Muslims. What happened to the Afghans who settled in Bangladesh between the 12th Century and mid 1700s? Didn't they marry local women? Of course some Bangladeshi Muslims will have Afghan blood in them, whether you like it or not.

In Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan), an unknown number of ethnic Pashtuns (together with at the later stage numbers of Iranian-speakers, these often secondary migrants from north India) settled among Bengalis from the 12th century to mid 18th century. These ethnic Afghans assimilated into Bengali culture, and intermarried with native Bengali Muslims to provide a component of the modern Bengali Muslim meme and biological identity, most prominently among the older wealthy classes of Bangladeshi Muslims.

Yeah, we are same same. No person in his wildest dream can distinguish between Indians and Bangladeshis. Basically Bangladeshis are Indians but due to religion we got separated and now have our own country. Now, we are Bangladeshi but in Pakistan's case its not same. Punjabi and Sindhis have Indian genes but Balochis, Pashtons have Afghan and Iranian genes. Are you Punjabi?

This is the most detailed argument I have heard justifying special treatment for Hindus.

I don't know how that would sit with the Indian Constitution's stance on secularism. Someone who understands Indian Constitution would be better qualified to evaluate it.



An individual can feel whatever they want. The question is whether the state shares that responsibility.



Ideally, any religion which can show persecution should be treated equally instead of making a special case for Hindus.

However, given the history of the TNT, there might be some room to manoeuver.

The word Secular was introduced in the constitution in 1976. It simply means that Indian govt will accept religious laws of different religion. Unlike western secularism which means separation of church and state.

My understanding is that if a person is a Indian citizen the govt of India will respect his belief of following whatever religion he or she follows and his right to abide by these religious laws.

However the case of a Bangladeshi immigrant is different. The person is not an Indian citizen and is most likely to be in the country illegally. So the first duty of the govt of the day is to deport him back to his country of origin. Even if they don't deport him the illegal migrant cannot claim protection under the constitution of India as he is not bound by the same.

Since he is not bound by the "secular" laws it is the govt's prerogative to frame the policies/laws for dealing with him. Here they can use the argument that since TNT was used to create a separate homeland especially for Muslims we will not give asylum to Muslim immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh but will grant the same to Hindus/ non Muslims of these countries

The BJP leader also said local people increasingly faced unemployment as people migrating from Bangladesh were taking up jobs in India. He said it was the demand of time that these "intrusions" stopped.

Assam sends 14 members to the Lok Sabha. In 2009, the Congress had won seven seats and BJP had won four seats mostly in urban centres.

The state votes in three phases in elections beginning next month.
