What's new

What will South Asia look like in 100 years?

Bangladesh is performing well ....I am very much optimistic that BD can be in the upper middle income category if not high income

India is already in the middle income category....We will be in the upper middle income by 2030 and high income by 2040

Well I would not consider 6% GDP growth a year for a country with a GDP/capita of just 1K US dollars as doing "well". It should be a minimum of 8% a year GDP growth IMO.

I think you are just extrapolating GDP/growth numbers that South Asia(bar Pakistan) is getting now and thinking that this will last for many decades. Many countries like Brazil and Mexico have fallen into the "middle-income" trap after upgrading from 3rd world to 2nd world status and never made it to 1st world status,

To move into high-income levels requires both access to resources such as energy and raw materials and also a political system that can direct the countries infrastructure and education to make this happen. IMO, only Sri Lanka has these ingredients - both BD and India do not yet have good enough political systems.

Well let's agree to disagree....
I cant argue for BD but a lot of economists have projected good growth for India for up to 20 50.......if we continue with 8 percent growth then we will be reach the high income stage by 2040

In 100 years from today the things will be completely different as we know them.

- Machines running on artificial intelligence will overtake humans

- Food will not be as we know it today, there might be some sort of food in shape of pills, you take one and don't need anything to eat or drink for a week

- How the kids will look like, what diseases they might have at what age etc will be determined before birth with over 90% accuracy

- With increasing literacy rates and more globalisation, people of South Asia will also finally learn to live with each other, more like Europe

- Jihadis - both Talibans and Hindutava / Saffron Chaddis - will cease to exist

- South Asia / China will be the centers of Research and Innovation

- Almost all indians will have access to toilets

- Pakistan will be Japan++ of South Asia

The U.S. is superior, yes, but that is because it did not have to go through the years of colonialism that China or India went through. The U.S. always had quite a strong manufacturing base since the 13 colonies era as well. US being the strongest may have been the trend for 200 years, but that is set to change, and has probably already changed. Even if 20% of India or China's population becomes an educated work force they will surpass the United States.
It took a long time for the roman empire to fall, and with the US having it's hands in most of the global financial and trade organizations and routes, it's going to take the US a very long time to decline in power. China and India have a very long way to go before they can declare themselves stronger than the US, and it's not like the US isn't making gains as well.

Buddy, a lot of things change in 100 years. Pakistan WILL NOT survive like this, hiding behind nukes for its survival. India's defense budget is rising each year and there will come a day where Indian defense budget is the size of Pakistan GDP. What will Pakistan do then? The best thing for Pakistan to do is quit the army and become a pacifist nation like Canada, Japan, or South Korea. Soft power!!
Of course a lot of things change in 100 years, but that doesn't mean reality suddenly shifts and turns negatives into positives. A hundred years is NOT a long time, that's a single person's life span, things won't change dramatically, when it comes to geopolitics.

You seem to have this idea that a large size is the end all be all, but it's not. In fact, there are a lot of reasons to believe that once Pakistan's gets it's financing in order, and finally contains the war it's fighting, it may very well surpass India's growth. Pakistan, unlike India, doesn't have the burden of a billion number population.

Also, Canada and RoK are not pacifist nations, both nations have a clear defense doctrine that dictates the use of military power to protect their nation's vital interests. Soft power is important, but it shouldn't be the only basket to put all your eggs in.

Finally, the day Pakistan quits the army and becomes pacifist, is the day India takes over Pakistan (covertly or overtly, take your pick). It's simply naive to think that Pakistan will survive if it's military is next to nonexistence.

But, I guess our great great grandkids will have to see how it all turns out. Will there even be a world in the next 100 years? Who knows.
Who knows, indeed.

1.Great land masses like SA, Indo-China, China, Russia, Europe, etc have constantly changed in looks - a period of unification followed by a period of separation. Centripetal and centrifugal forces operate alternatively but constantly. The religious demography will be different. I take religion first because it is the closest to a S Asian's heart. racial/ethnic/linguistic dynamics will work their definition. Suffice to say that internally we will look very different.

2. The W Asian power center would have become powerful to again cross the Hindukush to descend upon the Indo-Gangetic valleys. The riches of Hindustan with fertile plains and rich temple vaults will again lure it. Meanwhile China would be ready and prepared to cross the Himalayas to find newer and varying gateways into the sea.

3. SA will continue to be disrupted internally to be able to contain either a Chinese push or a W Asian rush.

Well, most of the people didn't factor 2040 when Computer Processing power will being way too advance and AI will be way too strong. Humans will look like dumb infront of AI. So my predictions are as below;

1) There wont be any boundaries so no south asia or world, Humans will be ruled by AI robot, who will make sure Humans stay peaceful .
2) Daily flight to mars, and single flight will be drop to only 20 days to Mars.
3) Human cyborgs will be common.
4) Human Age will increase upto 120 Average.
5) Mind chips will be common, and scientists and AI will together work on moving Human Minds on to computer.
6) Space elevator will be under construction in subcontinent seas.
7) There wont be any money, card or Phone. People will be connected with other people thhrough mind chips.

Ofcourrse, my above predictions are if no WWIII happens. If that happened then depending upon scale things will be completely different.
Hold your horses mate - Let us wait and get to middle-income first before predicting developed status.

The planet is running out of resources and for such a large number of people to reach developed status would require many technological breakthroughs, especially in energy generation.
foget it, if world continue to progress, there will be everything running from salt water and sun. So i don't think it will happen.
