What's new

What will be the benefits if West Bengal becomes part of Bangladesh?

This is ridiculous. Never gonna happen and for multiple reasons. Culturally a "Ghoti" and a "Bangal" are about as different as apples and oranges. Now add the religious factor into it -- Hindu Majority West Bengal and Muslim majority East Bengal. With secular bloggers dying in droves and illegal infiltration relentlessly into Malda , Murshidabad right upto districts like Nadia , the North -South 24 parganas and East-West Midnapore , the two bengals will merge when hell freezes over.

Bringing Sharat Chandra Bose , Suhrawardy and other idealist's utopian dreams(Although Suhrawardy was as sly as a fox) into this micro clash of ethnicities is about as alluring as a homogeneous mix of oil and water. Partition happened for a reason and we are very happy to keep it that way.

Here is a write from Indain Prespective about the difference .

West Bengal-Bangladesh divide: Mamata may have had reasons for opposing Teesta treaty

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's recent cold shoulder to Bangladesh regarding sharing of the Teesta waters is in keeping with a long tradition of each Bengal looking after its own interests. Hardnosed politics, rather than the nebulous concept of Bengali brotherhood, has governed ties between the two regions.

The signs have always been there: hilsa vs prawns, East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan, basha vs bari (both mean 'home')... Small semiotic markers that for decades said what many Bengali romantics refused to acknowledge. Partition in 1947 only put a political seal on an everwidening cultural and economic divide.

The two Bengals — West Bengal and Bangladesh — are different. And have been different for many years. All talk about an overarching Bengali unity is just that — talk.

Banerjee knows that sharing Teesta waters would sweep away her voters in north Bengal. Not to mention CPI(M) cadres taking to the streets. The other side of the barbed wire has been home to sundry anti-India militants, notably jihadis. Governments in Dhaka have chosen to turn a blind eye, fearing drying up of Arab aid and going against the growing pan-Islamic fervour among a section of the Bangladeshi population. But more than governments in Kolkata and Dhaka, it is the people of the two regions who have erased any memories of a common bond. Language, yes.

But culturally Kolkatans think their city to be the epicentre of Bengali culture. There is certain degree of condescension when discussing Bangladesh or Bangals (as people from Bangladesh are called in Bengali). Other than thinking of them as poor, distant country cousins, the space for Bangladesh in the common West Bengali's mind has more or less evaporated.

Economics, religion, culture — the differences are legion.

Too Many Cooks

Both Bengals' economies have developed in two distinct paths. Partition saw Bangladesh with acres of jute with few or no mills; in fact, most industries in Bengal were situated in West Bengal. Fledgling steel plants, small cement factories, foundries all had taken roots in the western half of undivided Bengal. The eastern half was and remains a primarily agrarian economy. Even now Bangladesh's only major industry is garments.

Bangladeshi wags say that every family in Sylhet (a district in Bangladesh) has a member living abroad. Most of the "Indian" restaurants dotting Europe are actually owned by Sylhetis. But migration is not a new phenomenon. Post-1947, huge numbers of Hindu professionals migrated west; a similar white-collar migration to Bangladesh did not happen. While Bangladeshi migrants tend to be overwhelmingly blue-collar workers, those leaving West Bengal are usually white-collar professionals.

Ballot vs Bullet

Nothing can be starker than the political difference between the two Bengals. While West Bengal has embraced a secular democracy, Bangladesh has lurched between military dictatorship and the ballot box. As part of India, West Bengal has had civilians wielding political power. Ruthlessly strong arm tactics did show up in Bengal politics (as during SS Ray's time and in the latter half of Left rule) but they have never been able to grab the political space completely. Bangladesh, on the contrary, has had a bloody history.

A violent independence struggle followed by the army forcing the democratically elected Awami League out of power. Bangladesh has seen many years of rule by the bayonet followed by fundamentalist-appeasing governments. The secular space has shrunk.

For a Few Takas More

Only a handful of intellectuals mouth the 'Bengalis are one' slogan. And frankly this has more to do with market forces than any love for a common cultural heritage. For West Bengal writers, Bangladesh provides a rich catchment area of some crores of readers over and above what they have on this side of the border. The same is true for singers, artists and other cultural impresarios. "One Bengal" echoes with rising sales and cash in the bank.

But for the ordinary Bengalis, other than an occasional Rabindrasangeet or folk singer, the other side of the border touches no chords.

For the younger lot, rare is the case when an artist harks back to a golden pre-Partition past. For those Bengalis who live on this side of the border, aspirations, role models, lifestyles are in sync with the rest of India. For them Bangladesh is just another country. Like Myanmar.

...and the Fish Tastes Different

That has been the case even when the two Bengals were one. Nothing differentiates the two Bengals more than the food. Scratch a Bangal and her disdain for the ghoti (what people from West Bengal are called) way of cooking frizzles up. The sneer is palpable, the questions verge on the existential: How can one add dollops of sugar to each and every dish? How can one just have posto (poppy seeds) and nothing else? How can paanch phoron (a combination of five spices) be used in all dishes?

Post-1947, differences between the two Bengals have been more marked. Religion now — and with it the associated cultural and social mores — is a big factor. But the seeds were sown much earlier. Class tensions between Hindu landlords and Muslim farmers were always present. Only the ostrich-minded have brushed this animosity aside.

Thankfully, the younger generation has moved ahead. Accepting that beyond a common tongue, there are minor similarities between the two sets of people, that the political boundary only mirrors the wall erected in the psyche. That accepted, Bengalis, on both sides, will be better off.

Full rights to Hindus and everyone else in an enlarged Bengal.

With Hindus making up around 30% of the new state, they
would have immense influence and no Muslim can become Prime Minister
without Hindu backing.

Don't think of religion but of a better life - faster economic development, more say in
the running of the state and total equality with Muslims.

Hindus were making up around 30% in East Bengal even in 1947, they will end up in Bihar as refugees! :)

3 factors behind 30's Kolkata.
British
Bengali people
East Bengal

British is replaced with India republic. Bengali people are already there. But East Bengal is missing.

But why we couldnt produce anything we have plenty of excuses. War, political dilemma before and after war.
But BD is upgrading fast today which I dont want to come out with any kinds of comparison. But our extreme hunger and vacuum for progress will lead us far, Im optimistic for that.

But similar 3 factors can be shown towards its lack of progress also.
British
Bengali people
West Bengal

In my opinion neither Bengal is full without one another. Something like Sarat chandra Bose proposed to equally stay united and they will decide what will be their position to maintain relation with rest of India.

We have produced many notable personalities in last seven decades, some Nobel laureates and Oscar winners too. There was one good politician, Bidhan Chandra Roy, and a long list of renowned writers, poets, painters, cinema directors, music composers, singers, actors, etc. :)

Pak is a ideological state, not a ethnic state dummy.

Bangladesh is a ethnic state, Bangladesh = Land of Bengali people ,thus West Bengal should emerge with Bangladesh .

Being a citizen of an ethnic state dummy has affected you. I said if your wish for Bengal comes true, same can hold for Punjab and if Punjabs unite, there's precious little left, so Pakistan will be gone. Don't wish for something you can't handle!

Then keep waste bengal with you.

You are right Bengal is only safe at the hands of Bangladeshis. We will make gold out of this waste. But these Bengalis are too much backdated whom are left with you.

Jekhane dekhibe sai uraia dekho tai.
