Found this interesting piece of article on the A-7 that could have joined the PAF in the late 70s.

After the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, Mullah Rockety, a graduate from the engineering university of Somalia, had established a career by salvaging equipment left behind by the Russians. One day Mullah Rockety was crouching in a field while answering the nature's call, keen eye as ever, he noticed something peculiar in the next field in the shape of dunes, upon close inspection it turned out to be a disused military base from the Soviet era and the dune shapes were man made and something was clearly buried. It turned out to be a Russian SU-27 Fighter aircraft. The ever eco conscious, Mullah Rockety used his mules to tow the aircraft to Peshawar. In due time, the aircraft was restored to it's former glory and today it flies with No 9 Squadron in the aggressor role.

F/A-18 "Hornet" PAF Skardu

With the slogan of "Peanuts" the Zia Administration refused President Carter's offer for A-7s and F-5Gs.Pakistan wanted a fighting punch that would work both tactically and strategically. Keeping in mind the importance of strike operations for the PAF in light of its plan to attack the Indian nuclear facility at Trombay the F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter was selected to meet the requirements of the PAF's Air Staff requirement.
With excellent High AoA handling the F/A-18 hornet also was an adept dogfighter. Maintaining this fighter also proved easy since twin engines were nothing new for the PAF's engineers who had been dealing with the F-6 for over two decades.
The first aircraft joined No-11 squadron and were a regular sight at PAF FoB Skardu as the Hornet's low speed handling proved excellent for short field operations.

Oscar, fun thread but please also consider starting a thread that discusses what specs and capabilities PAF ought to pursue in developing or purchasing it's next platforms

Shenyang J-31( FC-22) 15th sq "Cobras" Pakistan Air Force

By 2015 the PAF finds that it is in dire need of a fighter to match its neighbors impending 5th gen purchase and decides to try and regain the edge by purchasing a customized version of the Shenyang J-31. The aircraft has a few technologies borrowed from the Turkish F-X project including an ASELSAN AESA system, passive EW sensors, Active jammers among other things.
The aircraft can deploy a variety of weapons including Anti-ship weaponry as demonstrated by the C-802s here.
Due to its high cost the PAF was forced to borrow heavily from Chinese long term lease facilities which did put a strain on goodwill between the two nations.

@Oscar would it be hard to have an air superiority version of J-31 the F-60...bubble canopy extended nose etc?

That would be alright - but what of the specs/capabilities? STOL? Ability to use rough fields? Materials? Engines? Weight? Primary weapons? Engine TBO/ time it takes to re-equip/ How are present infrastructure fits or may need to be adjusted? - The J20 and J31/60 these are X planes, you guys are way more knowledgeable and should come up with specs to match our "what if" - our "what if" ship is 15-25 years away, what kinds of capabilities ought it have? What kinds of capabilities will the adversaries have?
