I know, but I still expect some of them to understand how things work here and how our culture has evolved.
That's the crazy bit. They can't understand. The reference point about Pakistanis to most Indians (especially non-Muslim Indians) is Indian Muslims and to somehow believe they are the same. Doesn't work like that. Regardless of whatever similarities existed pre 1947, post the creation of Pakistan, there has been a cultural evolution akin to that which is known to happen in islands - for example, Darwin's finches or the Pod Mrcaru lizards. Pakistan is the equivalent of a cultural island for Muslims. They have evolved away from us in a manner that is very rarely appreciated, certainly not appreciated enough. Those who talk of being the same people etc...have no idea of what they are talking about, each generation has less & less in common. Muslims & non-muslims in India too have evolved in a different direction. That difference actually produces much more than the 3-4 generational shifts that you tend to expect in the time period.
You have to assume that they genuinely are perplexed (not all of them are, some will be) by your ideas.
