So why is it that India did not even show up in the Russian poll list of their best allies? They chose China, Kazakhstan and then Belarus.

Geographical location. No contiguous border with India. Wait for the Putin Modi meet. MMS government was very very tight with US and even followed US interests at the expense of Indian interests. Result low relationship with Russia Iran and no pressure on Pakistan. Also no proper foreign policy for neighborhood. That has changed.
PS: not many people followed how Modi criticized US at UN. The reference to colonial mindset was for US.

Because that was the smart thing to do. Russia has gas to sell and china needs gas and has money to spare. What has that got to do with anything ? China is right next door.

There was never people to people relationship with Russia ever. We are just buddies with Russian govt.. In any case, had India had the same economic clout as China do today, India would have got at least 80% favorable opinion from pollsters.

You can call it whatever you want.We dont have any hesitation to stand up against the US if they played with ou security and interests.
Till now Russia is our close friend and I am absolutely it will remain like that in future .They didnt do anything that is detrimental to our national interests and security .But contributed for the strengthen of our defence.
We always gives priority to our own interests.That is why we reject the US proposal for the war against IS because that is a threat to our security.

Allies are needed when you are going to war. Since India has no plans to go to war, we continue to remain non aligned.

However if China is dreaming of a war then India will be forced to take ides.

You have to ask the Russians for that, not Indians. Chinese and Russians are neighbouring countries and share same kind of anti-Americanism. But Indian worldview is different, we are not into Anti-Americanism and don't want to take side in Russian and American rivalry.
