The subspecies of the black rhino -- which is classified as "critically endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species -- was last seen in western Africa in 2006.

The IUCN warns that other rhinos could follow saying Africa's northern white rhino is "teetering on the brink of extinction" while Asia's Javan rhino is "making its last stand" due to continued poaching and lack of conservation.

"In the case of the western black rhino and the northern white rhino the situation could have had very different results if the suggested conservation measures had been implemented," Simon Stuart, chair of the IUCN species survival commission said in a statement.

RDFRS: Western black rhino declared extinct

Dunno what to say.... am just sad

.
What a ******* shame... makes me really sad.... wtf...... wtf.....

.
Extinct in wild or completely extinct? I'm sure there are some specimens in zoo's.

I believe the same story applies to the Indian Bengal tiger which was extinct in the wild.

Extinct means just that, Extinct.

Or sometimes the population is too low for a comeback!!!

It has all to do with Kenyan jungle laws , they are soo lax.. S. Africa , Zimbabwe etc had tried their very best to help Rhinos , Elephants etc but they cant make a union unless all teh African nations aggree on it!!

Blame the poachers and the Chinese for it!!
The demand for their tusks remain High, ESPECIALLY in China..and with the new found wealth they can afford even more of these tusks etc , from Jewellery to `aphrodisiacs` etc. Sad but true!!
The ports from where these tusks leave (africa) have decent customs checking etc but the ports where these tusks/horns reach in Asia (read :China) does not care much abt it.
China has to make laws too to save these beautiful creatures.

How can the bas-turds kill these beautiful animals, and how can the equally pea-headed`s can use them as jewellery!!

. . . .
@El Weirdo

Your accusations about aphrodisiacs and China are both false. Elephant tusks are used for Jewelry, and Rhino horns are believed in China and Vietnam to cure illnesses like cancer. Neither are used for aphrodisiacs.

Rhinoceros - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rhinoceros - Rhino Horn Use: Fact vs. Fiction | Nature | PBS

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the horn, which is shaved or ground into a powder and dissolved in boiling water, is used to treat fever, rheumatism, gout, and other disorders. According to the 16th century Chinese pharmacist Li Shi Chen, the horn could also cure snakebites, hallucinations, typhoid, headaches, carbuncles, vomiting, food poisoning, and “devil possession.” (However, it is not, as commonly believed, prescribed as an aphrodisiac).

Poaching for Traditional Chinese Medicine

Try this: Ask the person next to you what he or she thinks rhino horn might be used for in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Chances are, they’ll tell you it is used as an aphrodisiac. It is not. In certain Asian countries, ground rhino horn is used to cure almost everything but impotence and sexual inadequacy. In Bernard Read’s translation of the 1597 Chinese materia medica “Pen Ts’ao Kang Mu”, the complete section on rhinoceros horn (“the best is from a freshly killed male animal”) reads as follows, with no mention of any aphrodisiac qualities:

Another lie is that most rhino horn goes to China. Most of the demand comes from Vietnam, not China.

Vietnam's Appetite For Rhino Horn Drives Poaching In Africa : Parallels : NPR

There’s a country that will pay $300,000 per rhino horn to cure cancer and hangovers, and it’s wiping out rhinos – Quartz

Why Does a Rhino Horn Cost $300,000? Because Vietnam Thinks It Cures Cancer and Hangovers - Gwynn Guilford - The Atlantic

What is driving this “highly organized” crime ring?

If you guessed “China,” you were wrong. The answer is Vietnam. The country’s appetite for rhino horn is so great that it now fetches up to $100,000/kg, making it worth more than its weight in gold. (Horns average around 1-3 kg each, depending on the species.)

very sad news.

but we can cross breed existing species of rhino and see if the offsprings are sterile or breeding..
mules are an example...a cross bred new species from exisrting species but can't breed on its own.

RIP. Survival of the fittest. Up next, the bengal tiger.
"The illicit demand for bones and body parts from wild tigers for use in Traditional Chinese medicine is the reason for the unrelenting poaching pressure on tigers on the Indian subcontinent. For at least a thousand years, tiger bones have been an ingredient in traditional medicines that are prescribed as a muscle strengthener and treatment for rheumatism and body pain"

Why not use Tylenol instead?

It's terrible how us humans are killing off species forever, I wish Australia still had the Thycaline.

A very sad day for the world.

We're losing .01% of all species on Earth every year. These are species neither we, our children or future generations will ever get the pleasure of seeing but more importantly we could be loosing organisms that can essentially help us cure current and future diseases.

I hope they save DNA from these animals for when cloning becomes a lot more viable.

LOL... trust me... I never expected this..... bahawawawwawawawawawawawwawawa.... these suckers want to devour not only Iranian flesh, but now they are going after critically endangered species as well........ bhawawwawawawwawawawawwa...

Btw, it also says "halal" in Pakistan too. Wtf... It's a dog, how can it be "halal"? :D

The striped Hyena is making a fast decline... The Saudi's new found taste for their meat is bringing down their population ....

The security in Tigers reserves have gone up several folds..... the number increased by 20% in 2011...Dunno the latest figures...apparantly one of my uncles told most Tigers reserves are no go area's and there is shoot at sight orders...

Don't worry.... considering the track record ...and the Climate these days...i do believe Nature themselves will correct the "human problem"
