hmm strictly speaking on the basis of ethnicity the subcontinent would have following major areas.

Afghanistan and NWFP(Historically linked to more of central asia than subcontinent)
Balochistan and Iran(Historically linked to more of Iran than subcontinent)
North and Central part Pakistani Punjab with Indian Punjab,himachil,kashmir and haryana
Southern Pakistani Punjab with Rajishstan
Sindh With Gujrat
Far East of subcontinent including West and East bengal, Assaam and periphal states.
Then the remaining central indian states
Lastly the southern Indian states.

Just to tell it, I stayed for an year in US with 2 other folks and I am Northie while other was Marathi and third one was Tamil and this was the best roomies I ever found. We watch all Movies (ofcourse with subtitles) and play songs of all languages. My Tamil frnd was in love of some of Hindi movies like hell including RDB, Jab We met etc while I loved watching Kakka kakka and Ambey shivam etc. We used to drive 60 miles for eating South Indian food and later on filter coffee. While I learnt few Tamil words, My Tamil frnd soon became good in Hindi. I am better in Marathi in comparison to tamil but then accent is a big issue .

here, (some) North & North west indians are fiercely proud of their "Aryan" heritage and their light skin (just like pakistani punjabis with whom they share racial similarities), and tend to look down on south indians (who are 80% dravidian race) and north east indians (who are tibetan, chinese and burmese origin) and call them "chinky".

North vs South is not a fair fight. South India which is primarily 4 states only comprises of 25% of the population and thanks to their socio-economic indices comparable to south-east asia and successful family planning, demographically south is dwindling. Unlike the North which has sub-saharan socio-economic indicies and pro-creating in multiples and further exacerbating over population problem.

South India as a separate national entity would have been the most socio-economically progressive part of south asia. Now, South is royally screwed because come next "re-districting" of the parliament their powershare in the Indian Parliament will dilute.

People will find a way to discriminate. If they can't use "race" or "religion", they will use something else, in this case the region of birth and socio-economics.

Where do you get these amusing stories? these are only over net and few people talk about this.

It is a mix of many types of indigenous people. Most of them have different genetics and ethnicity which are spread all over India. So do not try to distinguish them through regions.

This is total BS. All north Indians including Punjabis, Bhirais, Rajputs, Gujaratis, Bengali, Jats etc has same linkage.

North vs South may be the very common debate, but on the philosophical and economic level Hindi vs Non-Hindi or Heatland vs Periphery would be the debate of the future in India. If you really pay attention, the Hindi Heartland is the dragging the Indian periphery in terms of economic growth.

Raj Thackeray, is an exception now. Once the massive migration from Indo-gangetic plains to South of Vindyas picks stream Raj Tahckeray will be the norm. Watch out!

when it comes to discrimination Indians take it to a whole new level, you cannot imagine. A person would be discriminated on the basis of the region, religion, caste, lifestyle ... you name it... even to the level which Actor he likes or dislikes can be used against him... Han Chinese will look like boy-scouts infront of this.

There are a lot of south indians who migrate to other parts of india including mumbai and delhi as well . do remember . Emergence of thackerays in the south will be bad for the southies living here in the north . Our societies are too integrated now for anyone to be able to afford such a conflict or as you said 'more thackerays' .
