I don't think any state or or group of people are big enough in India to be significant or dominant.

Then you can select different aspects like population, GDP, HDI, Tax ravenues, Literacy rate and stuff.
I know people say religion can't hold the nation together. But I think for India it has worked. I know India is secular and doesn't have a state religion and all that but religion is what united entire India, if you kinda think about it.
North Indians have more in common with someone from Lahore or Karachi then someone from Bangalore or Chennai.
