The Urdu speaking people who migrated from India, by default spoke Urdu - the name Urdu Speaking says it all. Many of those who migrated from India and not only Urdu specking populace, and also those who populated areas which were included in Pakistan, in early days, could read, write and speak Hindi. Not many now.
Mughals did not call Hindi as Urdu.
Urdu, is a derivative of Turkish word Ordu, which means Army or Lashkar. At certain stages, Urdu was also known as Lashkari language. As the Muslim Armies included soldiers from different hues and spoke different languages, a need for a common language was necessitated. It thus emerged as a common language and at certain time, a bit of Khariboli dialect also became part of it. Even now, in the modern format, Urdu includes over 7000 common Turkish words. It also have words from Persian, Pashto, Arabic etc.
Sab kuch sirf tumhara ho gaya IVC bhi or Urdu zabaan bhi. Kya logic hai.
Go to old town Lahore, there are still places where Hindi is written on the walls...
Some Sikhs also use it.
As someone said up there, due to the IVC starting up in Pak, we are the ultimate copyright holders of all things India. If God ever arbitrates a patent case between us, we'd win the legal argument.

It's not important that he used a Hindi word, it's important that as the PM of Pakistan, he is unable to speak the national language properly. I am quite well versed in a number of regional and international languages but when speaking in Urdu, I try my utmost to deliver the entire dialogue in pure and unadulterated Urdu, in respect to the national language.
Neither could Benazir or her father (some would add Nawaz Sharif, Ghulam Ishaq and Fazal Elahi to that group too).
Definition of proper can change - Urdu was constructed by taking the pre-Islamic Khadi Boli dialect (which was based on Sanskrit) and replacing some of the original words with loan words from Persian and Arabic.
It is understandable, given that Urdu is not a native language of the area now known as Pakistan.
Nope. You are wrong.
This also is the most remarkable thing.
Though Urdu was not spoken as a mother tongue in this area, it originated from this area.
Now, 65 years after the creation of Pakistan, this is the lingua franca of Pakistan and is understood and is spoken in close to 99% Pakistan.
Urdu / Hindi - what's the difference?
