Police: Catholic nun likely raped in India clashes

Indian authorities arrested four people and suspended a police officer Friday following a medical report indicating a Catholic nun was likely raped in an attack by a Hindu mob during religious clashes, a state government spokesman said.

The government of eastern Orissa state also ordered an investigation by a senior police officer into the incident, said Chittaranjan Pati, the spokesman for the state's top elected official.

The nun filed a police complaint on Aug. 25, alleging she was raped when a large Hindu mob attacked a prayer hall in Orissa state's Kandhamal district where she worked. She told the police she was paraded naked after the rape.

The state government suspended police inspector K.N. Rao for not acting promptly on the complaint, Pati said.

Doctors conducted a medical examination after the nun filed the complaint in August, but police did not receive the report until Thursday, Rao told The Associated press earlier Friday. He blamed the local hospital for not sending police the report sooner.

Rao said that "the doctors say there are signs and symptoms of rape," but he had not read the entire medical report.

News reports Friday said the medical report had confirmed the rape.

The nun did not name her attacker in the complaint, Rao said.

The doctors, however, put the blame on police for not collecting the report.

"We prepared the report immediately and called up the inspector the next day and even sent a reminder to him to collect the report," Sangeeta Mishra, one of the doctors who examined the nun told The Indian Express newspaper.

The doctor could not immediately be reached for independent verification.

Other details were not immediately available.

Clashes between Hindus and Christians in Kandhamal district began Aug. 24 following the killing of a Hindu religious leader. At the time, police blamed Maoist rebels active in the area, but conservative Hindu groups blamed Christian residents and set fire to a a Christian orphanage.

The violence then escalated as Hindu mobs attacked churches, shops and homes.

According to the state government, 32 people have died in the ensuing violence. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India has said at least 40 Christians have been killed.

Early Thursday, the violence spread to Kandhamal's neighboring district of Boudh where a group of nearly 150 people torched over 100 houses, according to Manoranjan Kanar, a local police officer.

He gave no other details about the attack, but added that there were no casualties or injuries.

The attacks against Christians also have spread to the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Relations are usually peaceful between Christians, who make up 2.5 percent of India's 1.1 billion people, and Hindus, who account for more than 80 percent.

However, hard-line Hindu groups claim Christian missionary groups are forcing or bribing people to convert to Christianity, charges denied by Christian leaders.

Four people have been arrested in the eastern Indian state of Orissa in connection with the rape of a Catholic nun more than a month ago, police say

At least one police officer has been suspended, officials say. The 29-year-old nun lodged a complaint on 25 August alleging rape by a member of a Hindu mob in Kandhamal district.

Police are criticised for being slow to act - they say they have been trying to keep the peace in the area, which has seen weeks of Hindu-Christian violence.
Riots began after a Hindu religious leader was shot dead.
Although left-wing Maoist rebels in the state claimed responsibility for the killing, hard-line Hindu groups blamed the minority Christian community for the death. More than 30 people have been killed in the violence and dozens of churches and Christian institutions have been vandalised.

'Confirmed'
Kandhamal police chief Praveen Kumar confirmed the rape and told the BBC that four people had been arrested. He said the absence of the nun from the area had hampered the investigations. "But we are taking action and the culprits will be punished," he said.

The Catholic nun, working with the Divyajyoti Pastoral Centre at Kanjemandi village, alleged that she was dragged out of a Hindu man's house where she had taken shelter along with a 55-year-old priest, Father Thomas Chellantharayil.

She was taken to an abandoned house where she was raped by a member of the mob, she said in her complaint filed on 25 August.

She also alleged that she was paraded naked through the streets.
Sangeeta Mishra, the doctor who conducted the medical test on the nun the same evening, also confirmed the rape.
"We immediately informed the police, but they never came to collect the report," Dr Mishra said.

The BBC's Sandeep Sahu in the Orissan capital Bhubaneswar says the police finally began investigating the case on Thursday - a full 38 days after the incident - following reports of the rape in the media.
Police in the Kandhamal area have said they were unable to take action earlier as they were busy trying to deal with the violence.

"I was very busy maintaining law and order. I have just one sub-inspector and 13 constables at my disposal. For me, maintaining law and order was the first priority," police officer K Narayan Rao said.

Officials in Bhubaneswar said Mr Rao had now been suspended.
Clashes between Hindus and Christians began in Orissa in August when a Hindu religious leader was shot dead. Attacks on Christians have also been reported in the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Hindu groups have long accused Christian priests of bribing poor tribes and low-caste Hindus to convert to Christianity. Christians say lower-caste Hindus convert willingly to escape the Hindu caste system.

Violence against Christians spreads to other districts in Orissa ​

NEW DELHI, Oct. 9 APP: Communal violence in India which hit Indian states of Orissa, Assam. Karnatka and Maharashtra during the last two month, has now spread to Boudh district of Orissa state.

According to media reports quoting police sources, the Hindus penetrated into Boudh district on late last night and set on fire eight houses. However, the police claimed that it was an ethnic violence.

The Boudh is bordering the worst-hit Kandhamal district.

The attackers have blocked roads by cutting trees which hindered police movement.

The police have claimed arrest of the leaders of attackers.

The Orissa state has witnessed worst type of communal violence against Christians which claimed over fifty lives during the last two months.

13 killed in Manipur bomb blast​

IMPHAL: At least 13 people were killed and an unspecified number of people were injured as a powerful bomb exploded near a high-security zone in the Indian state of Manipur capital here Tuesday evening, police said.

The blast took place at about 7.30 p.m. near the zone which houses a police commando training centre, police said, adding that most of the victims were civilians.

No outfit immediately claimed responsibility for the blast. The nature of the explosion was being investigated, police officials said.

Naxalites kill at least 12 security personnel in Chhattisgarh​

NEW DELHI, Oct 20 (APP): The Naxalites on Monday killed at least 12 security personnel in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh state.

Media reports quoting Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) sources said in the ambush, another 12 personnel of CRPF and Border Roads Organisation were also injured.

The attack was carried out on the first day of filing of nomination papers for Chhattisgarh state elections.

One of the attackers was killed in retaliatory fire, the sources said.

The Naxalites are active in north eastern states of India.

Three people were killed when a medical van was blown up by an improvised explosive device in the Indian state of West Bengal, police say.

They have blamed Maoist rebels for triggering the blast.

The explosion occurred in a remote jungle area in West Midnapore district near the village of Chowkisal.

About 6,000 people have been killed in violence linked to Maoist rebels over the past 20 years. They are active in states across east and central India.

Police say that in the latest incident, a doctor and his driver were among those killed.

They say that the Maoists had possibly laid the explosives to target a police convoy but they hit the medical van instead.

The Maoists focus on areas where people are poor but there is great mineral wealth.

The rebels say they represent the rights of landless farmhands and tribal communities.

They have attacked police outposts and enforced strikes in India's mineral heartland.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently said the Maoist movement is the "biggest threat to India's national security".

internal threats are harder to address. Chance of war with pakistan or any other nation is minute now, but maoists are a constant threat.

the last time the army attacked ULFA in Assam, the ULFA were severely crippled. I hope same can be done in Manipur and other states. The army has to inflict heavy losses on the maoists while the government should do more to convince the people not to support maoists. pointing out atrocities like what happened today are a good way of showing the populace why maoists are nothing but dirt.
