Viewpoint: Britain must pay reparations to India

Nonsense... what did the current British people do against us?

What happened over 70 years ago cannot be blamed upon current generations... its as stupid as letting Germans pay for what their previous generations did in Greece.

We should rather try to increase economic, scientific, military and political cooperation and let the past rest to look to the future of both nations

Watch the video - While Tharoor conceded that perhaps today's Britons are not responsible for some of these reparations, he said there was a "moral debt" that needs to be paid.

Alleging that many of today's problems in colonised countries — "including the persistence and in some cases the creation of racial, ethnic, and religious tensions were the direct result of the colonial experience" — he said many countries had indeed paid reparations. Germany had paid Israel and Poland, Italy paid Libya, Japan paid Korea, he said, adding that indeed Britain had also paid, to New Zealand's Māoris, since the 1970s.

"So this is not something that is unprecedented or unheard of that is somehow going to open some nasty Pandora's box," he said.

Denying that such reparations were to empower anybody, he said that Britain should use it as a tool to "atone for the wrongs that have been done." He urged Britons to accept they had to pay reparation "on principle".

"As far as I'm concerned, the ability to acknowledge a wrong that has been done, to simply say sorry will go a far long way than some percentage of GDP in form of aid," he said. "What is required, it seems to me, is accepting the principle that reparations are owed."

Then what wrong did our Present generation do that they had to suffer colonial hang over till today ... which includes partition and enmity with our neighbor...

What wrong did present generation of Bengalis do that they are suffering from Stunt growth and genetic weakness due to 2 centuries of famines their ancestors have suffered ...

What wrong did Indians do that it incurred debt's from world war 2 which it paid even after its independence ...

What did the present generation do that our cultural heritages our piece of arts and legendary sculpture's , statues of gods and temple treasures are still in the possession of British Museum's and private collections...

Please remember one thing, all of us.

Forget reparations. A simple sorry from the head of state would go a long way.

The Queen recently went to Ireland and did the same. In the past they did the same to the Maoris in New Zealand.

I would expect at least as much, if not more. I will not hold my breath for it though.

Yes the British should pay its former colonies, because it looted and plundered the nations as they saw fit. They should not only pay for their damage fiscally, but apologize for their 'quenching' rebellions inhumanely.

I would expect at least as much, if not more. I will not hold my breath for it though.

I agree on both of the statements here

Every other former colony of England pales, even put together collectively, compared to the Jewel in their Crown.

We were their cash cow for two centuries. And their blood cow for two Great Wars.

Hmm, and then the Indian members claim that my city (Hong Kong) is only a first-world city because of the British colonialism.

Indians should know better than anyone else, that the British colonialists only took, they never gave.

And it also doesn't explain why Shanghai (despite not being a colony) is now arguably more advanced than even Hong Kong.

Err do point put who said that

So Britain owes £500 trillion?

Unkhe kapde bhi uthar diye toh itna nahi de payenge

Yes I saw it... but I still dont think that its right for anyone to be held accountable for something that they have not done.

You would not like to be punished for the crimes of your father either, right?

Whats next, Jews asking for reparation from Italy because the Romans threw them out of Israel?

My point is still the same, better improve economic relations which will be far more lucrative and sensible than to blame people for crimes which were committed when they werent even born....
