It is from Wikipedia and is not strictly academic, so it may be some mistakes there but believable.

After some study about this issue, I was wrong about the territories that China occupied during and after the Sino-Vietnam war, where not all the occupied land were ceded to China and many of them were given back to Vietnam in 1991 normalisation of bilateral relations between two countries. When talks about the past Imperial colonialism during 19th century, I think all Asian were victim of that aspect, Vietnam is no exception. But what more important is that should be served as lesson for all Asian to realize that the West are always waiting the chance to invade us either politically or economically. The form of Imperial colonialism is quite different than the time in 19th Century, they now prefer installing puppet government other than actual occupy the country. But the main goal of Imperial colonialism remains the same where they want to exploit our resources and market, dictate our domestic and foreign policy, such as the case in Japan and Philippine. Today China is no more a semi-colony and so do Vietnam is no more a colony of the West. More important that is we now do not have to subject anymore unequal treaties and stand as equal. Therefore, We all Asian should grateful that our ancestors fought hard to repel the foreign power from our country, so we Asian today can stand with dignity and national pride.
However, I find it quite offensive that when an Asian joke about other Asian's past terrible experience under Imperial Colonialism rule. I was born in HK and in the late era of colony, and I still saw many injustice in our society, which is fortunate, unlike my parents that faced the actual oppression and corruption from colonial government. In other place in Asia, Indian still hate the British till today, Korean views Japan as an enemy and never forget the Japanese crimes when they were under their rule. President Duterte recently asks the US to apologize for their past massacres in Philippines. But you, as an Asian where your own country even subjected to the same Imperial Colonialism in the past, joke about other Asian' suffering, well, this really shows your level.

I don't really care about Vietnam-China tensions, but I know this: Almost every single country US intervened militarily, it killed thousands of civilians directly and indirectly and turned the place into a shithole. If I was Vietnam, I wouldn't invite US to the area. And what is US going to do? Launch war against China? Hell they won't. Vietnam-China tensions can only solved by Vietnam and China, that's it, US military will make everything worse, as always.
