The Kingdom of Siam once threatened to invade the Malacca Sultanate. To appease the Siamese the Sultan would present a "Bunga Emas" gold flower plant every year to the King of Siam.
Then the Sultanate as a tributary state of China requested help from Ming China. Ming China send Admiral ZhengHE to warn the King of Siam.
Siam King black down and the Malacca Sultanate was saved.

Well being a tribute paying state is not something we are proud of.
Korea or Siam is a special case. China had a discriminate tribute system in place that caused sometimes bad blood in Vietnam. Korea ranks #1 before imperial court. Vietnam #2. other countries as Siam or Laos are 3, 4, 5 and so forth. That’s ok for us.
The problem is when chiness became bad mood they placed Vietnam behind Siam or even Laos.
Back then in one case when happened Vietnam threatened to quit the treaty. Understandable such move would draw a dramatic response by China.

Even in the past, I do not think China wanted to make Vietnam a vassal state or even a tributary but instead to assimilate Vietnam into China. Qing China was actually very puzzled why Viets keep resisting China.

Anyway, today we live in a modern era so relationship between individual countries have changed. As I mention earlier, today's China's demands are very reasonable. Just recognized Taiwan as part of China, do not interfere in China's internal affairs and just stay neutral in China-US confrontation.

Recognizing Taiwan as part of China costs us nothing you will not find anyone in VN to say otherwise. Other things as not interfere other people’s affairs or US/CN do not concern us. So.
VN major concern is a full scale war in east Asia. Or somebody takes our lands, our islands, our seas.

China is not involved in the Kashmir issue. We have our own separate territory dispute with India. There is no analogy.
