Vietnam ranked fourth in 2022 International Math Olympiad

A lot of the new urban developments in Vietnam look like those in China. I feel like they are really speeding up their development now. Vietnamese are very bold and entrepreneurial people.
In fact, Vietnamese, like China, Japan and South Korea, are a member of the Confucian ideological system. Almost all Vietnamese have some Chinese descent. I think Vietnam and Singapore should be divided into East Asian countries. When dividing regions, we should not only refer to geographical location, but also culture.

Congratulations Vietnam..

I though the rank would be : China-S. Korea-Japan-Vietnam. But I'm pretty sure the majority of US members are Asian.

Although it is something to be proud, but it is only a competition. Doesn't mean our quality of education is better than Japan's. We are very far behind.

And there were 4 ethnic Chinese in the US team this year.

All 6 members of the Chinese team got the score of 42/42. Unimaginable.

Vietnam needs to keep up and never let go.
Japan will continue to decline until they remove the Abe-ists.
Korea will go down in the next few years until Yoon is removed.

Vietnam needs to fight harder, get EV and core industries in place.

I really doubt one can ascribe the success to Confucian system. Confucian system was there for like 1000s of years. Most of the achievements of these contries - though incredible- are only there in last few decades.
I think its good old social reform - land reforms, removal of birth based inequalities like in meiji era in japan. All these ended cruel customs preventing workers from being respected. Now that these obstacles are removed the people there are working very well achieving great resutls.

It's really the one link between our countries. Our political and society are different but we are all inspired by Confucianism.
Confucianism focus heavily on education, which is why all of these countries have very hard exams.

Vinfast just got awarded a massive subsidy to open a car plant in North Carolina and is aggressively expanding. Vietnam is full of vigor and is just getting its groove on.

Fme, Vietnamese are way more bold and daring and entrepreneurial than Japanese are. Japan is the most overrated Asian country, the reality is that they just got a good head start. Most Japanese I’ve met were very quiet and polite but socially awkward. They seemed timid and into their own hobbies, but were definitely not go getters like the Viets I’ve known. Probably because they have been used to the good life for so long.

It’s not a coincidence all of the most industrialized Asian countries are the Confucian ones.

Like all societies, we nosedive under bad leaders.
Think of Vietnam under Bao Dai or China under the late Qing, with good leadership, we will rise.

I'm surprised that an American actually knows that the foundation of industrial development in East Asian countries comes from land reform. I pay tribute to your erudition.

Yes, China, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan have all used various means to complete land reform in national industrialization, eliminating landlord groups and liberating a large number of rural labor forces. This is the most important basic condition for the smooth industrialization of East Asia.

But you obviously don't understand Confucian culture. It is the Confucian culture that makes all East Asian countries choose land reform. It is also the Confucian culture that makes us successfully carry out the land reform.

Look at India, modi's kind of shallow land reform even can't be implemented.

The Japanese are not timid, but introverted and serious. This is a common shortcoming of all East Asian countries, but the situation of the Japanese is the most serious. So East Asians are prone to depression and mental diseases. Vietnamese are better in this respect.

Confucian culture does place greater importance on discipline, learning and education than other cultures, which is conducive for economic development in the early stages. It's not the only factor but definitely a major factor.

But I would add that too much of anything is a bad thing. East Asian cultures have among the lowest TFRs in the world as a result, and its population share of the world is rapidly shrinking.

Japan and SK is already witnessing a shrinking population. China's population will also start to decline by this year or next year.
And the population decline will continue for 30 years, 50 years, 100 years and beyond. I don't see how the problem can be reversed in the foreseeable future when TFR is so abysmally low at almost half the replacement rate of 2.1. Each generation will be almost be half the size of the previous generation at current TFRs. Large scale immigration is unlikely.

An ever shrinking population will eventually lead to a stagnant economy. Productivity gains will be wiped out by the fall in labor force, like in Japan. Not to mention the structural aging population which further adds pressure on the economy.

Actually this reformation is the backbone of industrialization in lots of places. The approaches are different but end results are same.

In west - it started with Protestant reformation which questioned the authority of Pope and priests on people. Cromwell ended elite latin liturgy in Churches way back in 15th century and mandated English as language of religion. He also seized all the land of monasteries in England and appropriated to state - and that was one-third of available land in England then. Protestants encouraged people to learn bible by themselves and interpret by themselves as they are against Priestocracy. This rapidly improved literacy. They also ended salvation by money payment as was the norm in catholic church and instead encouraged people to look for "signs" of salvation which included avoiding "sins" such as wine and women. This meant people worked hard but were not spending it which led to capital being accumulated. This capital is what financed the colonial adventures later on.

In Japan it was meiji reformation - he had shoguns shot when they refused to give up their hereditary entitlements. In Russia it was Stalin who ended Kulaks and made Russians a super power. It maybe hard to believe now but in early 20th century an average russian was worse off than an average indian in British India.

In Korea it was land reform by Park and China it was Mao.
I actually admire the reformation in Russia and East Asia a lot because they did not have the comfort of colonial possessions and truly bootstrapped themselves.

India never had reformation. They directly settled to imitating west as it is NOW - instead of how west was in 15-18th centuries. West is stagnant now - one reason is that it already achieved high standards of living. Second is the accumulated racism , unbridled capitalism now biting back. THis means India settled for stagnant growth of west without becoming wealthy first.

There are many policy tools that can get TFR up while totally align with Confucius. There was a time when China have the anti gangster law, that outlaw all fking outside marriage. Unfortunately this law harm the elites who fk a lot. This law was quickly written off.

If China reinstitute anti gangster law, a lot of people who want to fk will get married instead of becoming swinger.
