Vietnam protests Taiwan’s moves in Spratly
Last Updated: Thursday, July 19, 2012 10:00:00
Ba Binh is the largest of the Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands in the East Sea, and the only one where fresh water is available

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’s National Border Committee on Wednesday condemned Taiwan’s plan to extend a runway on Ba Binh Island in the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago, which is sovereign Vietnamese territory.

The committee also slammed a trip to the archipelago by a group of Taiwanese university students and professors as part of their defense education.

On July 15 Taiwanese newspaper Liberty Times reported that Taiwan was considering extending the runway on Ba Binh, the largest island in Truong Sa and some 860 miles from Taiwan, by 500 meters. It is also the only island where fresh water is available.

The same day Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reported that 12 students at Tainan-based National Cheng Kung University and three professors wrapped up a week-long trip to Ba Binh.

The trip was meant to help the students gain a better understanding of the country's East Sea policies, defense efforts, and issues such as ecological protection, CNA quoted the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense as saying.

The purpose of the trip was also to "assert [Taiwan's] sovereignty" over the region, the ministry said.

Regional power confronts China over East Sea

A spokesman for Vietnam’s National Border Committee said Vietnam has sufficient legal and historical evidence to affirm its sovereignty over the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagos.

"Activities by parties in the Truong Sa archipelago without Vietnam's permission violate Vietnam's sovereignty and international laws, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and go against the spirit of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) while also causing tension in the East Sea," he said.

The committee also warned Taiwan to desist from such activities in future.

ASEAN chair Cambodia, which was accused by several members of stonewalling in support of key ally China, on Friday blamed “two countries” for scuttling the communique by refusing to agree to the six points it had initially proposed.

“Cambodia is not at fault at all,” Foreign Minister Hor Namhong told a news conference.

“Why the Foreign Ministers meeting was unable to issue a joint communique on these six points which were all raised by me? Why did two countries keep opposing? Probably, there was a plan behind the scenes against Cambodia.”

I guess Vietnam finally can't hide her true aggressive self by blaming China as the sole aggressor in the SCS disputes. After her aggressive intimidation of Cambodia on last weeks' failed ASEAN Summit, she comes right back trying to take out Taiwan in the OP's article. Very soon she'll have no friend in ASEAN because, eventually, Philippines will try to distance herself from this kind of aggressiveness.

that's Taiping (太平岛) island, the biggest island in Spratly and the only island which has fresh water on it in both Paracel and Spratly,it was said that the island can provide logistic supplies to at least 10,000 troops, that's a huge asset, and whoever controls this one holds an big edge over other claimants.

If Vietcong feel that it can easily intimidate Taiwan, they will soon find out that they are wrong. They bark loud but have no bite. This would also affect Taiwanese investment in Vietnam. Finally, Taiwanese would begin to reject their brides.

Well no one can blame China, Taiwan or even Philippines to strengthen their defenses of their sovereign islands in SCS after Vietnam announced her air patrols in the Spratly last month. By announcing the 'air patrols' she inadvertently tells the world this part of the world belongs to her and any intrusions into this area are answered by her military jets.

LOL what balls! It's like a little midget trying to take out the giants of this world.

we love the way Russian coast guard did to chinese ships, it's time to arrest, shoot and sink all chinese-TW ships to destroy their economy, tiny TW must be turned back to poor and dirty fishing tribes again:P

Idiot. You think that the Taiwanese investors in Vietnam because to serve only Vietnam's benefits? No, It is cooperation for mutual benefit. If not, with limited resources, Taiwan can get pretty economy like so?

Previously, in Vietnam percentage of women more than men, but the situation is changing. If the situation of gender balance situation continues to change, then Vietnam will do not allow brides get married the foreign, then Taiwan and China would be redundant men. And then they will fight each other to get the bride instead of thinking about invading for the remote islands.
I heard that in Taiwan, in many families the brothers marry a common chinese wife?

Well, Taiwan thinks that Viet Cong can not intimidate Taiwan then its need to think twice. My personal that VN does not need to deal with Taiwan when both very good relationship, but in any worst case Taiwan could not stand any chances.

The article says Vietnam is only barking but doesn't bite Taiwan. I believe Vietnam won't do anything even if Taiwan extends the runway.

Hehe, as i said: tiny TW means nothing to us we're controlling far more isl and shoals than TW-CN combined, and china-tw can't use the runway to attach vn too, i also think our govt. won't waste times with that naughty kid. We should focus on looting Gold from chinese-ASEAN like what we did to chinese in VN-Laos-Camb-Thailand during 1980s.

once day, when we kick china out of all Spratly isl, then TW will flee with her tail between her leg too:P

If Taiwan continue to provoke Viet Nam then Taiwan will expect more of our vessels (either fishermen ship or even navy patrol) to "intrude" Taiping water in the future. We have done this for years with the Paracel islands and now ít's Taiwan's turn with Taiping island.

that's funny! what is lengthening of our airplane runway and visits by our civilians to our island have to do with "provocation"? we have been tolerating vietcongs' massive provocations for too long! its time for a showdown!
