Veto politics gives cover to terrorists like Hafiz Saeed, Masood Azhar: UN chief
Essential to create the room of dialogue for countries to understand the terrorism must be eradicated: António Guterres. (Photo: Reuters)
HIGHLIGHTS
Responding to a specific question on Pakistan providing support and safe haven to Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed and Jaish Chief Masood Azhar, Guterres said, "It is not necessary that if we designate an organisation as a terror organistation, the member nations and the country necessarily implement it. The major hindrance is of the vetoes which roadblocks implementation of various acts in consideration. India has been proposing comprehensive convention of international terrorism, nothing happened so far."
He also said that there is no "justification" for terrorism and that his office is engaged with Pakistan. "We have been in dialogue with not only Pakistan but other countries as well over terror. Essential to create the room of dialogue for countries to understand the terrorism must be eradicated," he said.
Despite Pakistan pushing for third party intervention to resolve the issue of Kashmir, the UN chief was very clear that all he could offer his good offices but the matter is "bilateral" and up to the two stakeholders, India and Pakistan, to resolve. "I appeal for a solution to be found but the UN isn't directly involved in the solution," he said.
Regarding Pakistan using the UN platform to further their propaganda, even using fake picture of Kashmiri pandits, portraying them as victims of Indian state's atrocity, he said, "You can't imagine the number of people that want me to take action but these problems can only be addressed with dialogue. Have received many letters from many sources in relation to this issue," said Antonio Guterres.
One of the most important aspects of the conversation was the humanitarian crisis that has gripped the entire region, the Rohingya crisis emanating from Myanmar. Calling it the "worst" discrimination in the world, the UN chief was very clear that the Rohingyas in India cannot be sent back till it is safe for them to go back to Myanmar.
"I appeal to India to receive Rohingyas fleeing and not to send the refugees back to their country. There are tens of thousands of Rohingyas in India. India can play a role for the problem to be effectively addressed, by helping Myanmar is a construction of the resources for the reconciliation and safe return of the refugees," he said.
India has taken a very tough stand on the issue of Rohingyas with adverse reports on their activities here.
The UNSG was in India on a three-day visit. He conferred the 'Champions of Earth' award to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
Guterres also paid obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar and was honoured with a siropa by the Sikh priest.
