Should be punishment? LOL all this happened more than a hundred years back. Variam Kunnan was shot dead rather executed for his crimes. Many were arrested.

First of all you need to consider both SC & ST population. And their combined population was much higher in the princely state of Hyderabad. See the table below for the SC & ST population by district in the current Telangana state to get an idea of the lost opportunity.

Had these people embraced Islam, Hyderabad would have much larger Muslim population and annexation would have been far more difficult. Even in Kashmir most of the Pandits embraced Islam in the late 1800s which is making the claim for Kashmir to join Pakistan much easier today. Ambedkar just rocked the plan of Nizam by steering the Dalits towards Buddhism and made the job of Nehru/Patel much easier to annex Hyderabad.

Yes. Ambedkar's Scheduled Caste Federation party(now called Republican Party of India -RPI) was in tie up with Bharatiya Jansangh (former party of BJP).

Even today RPI is in tie up with BJP in Maharashtra and RPI's Ramdas Athawale is Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment in Modi's government.
