WASHINGTON: Two key US officials — Defence Secretary James Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen Joseph Dunford — will visit Pakistan soon for seeking Islamabad’s cooperation in war against the Taliban.

Gen Dunford is expected early next week while Secretary Mattis will arrive in the first week of December, diplomatic sources told Dawn, adding that exact dates of their visit could not be disclosed for security reasons.

The Pentagon’s Joint Staff Director Lt Gen Kenneth McKenzie told a news briefing on Thursday that the United States has completed additional deployments in Afghanistan by adding 3,000 troops to its existing strength and is ready to conduct joint combat missions with official Afghan forces.

The United States now has a total of 14,000 troops in Afghanistan and expects 2,000 additional troops from its Nato allies.

The deployments are part of a US strategy to persuade Taliban to hold peace talks with the Afghan government by defeating them in the battlefield. And Secretary Mattis and Gen Dunford are expected to seek Pakistan’s cooperation to accomplish this goal when they visit Islamabad.

The two key US defence officials are likely to ask Pakistan to eliminate the Haqqani Network which, they claim, still has hideouts in Fata and uses them for launching attacks into Afghanistan.

On Thursday, US Central Command Chief General Joseph Votel also delivered a similar message to the country’s top military leadership.

The US demand for “more concrete” actions against the Haqqani Network also dominated talks between Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Washington last month.

The foreign minister also met US National Security Advisor Gen H.R. McMaster at the White House, which is believed to have focused entirely on the US demand for Pakistan to do more.

Pakistan responds to US charges by referring to recent military operations that Washington also acknowledges have greatly reduced the threat of terrorism inside the country.

Pakistan is a very strange place my friend. Americans understand that. We have been American allies and they have been ours. Now it is very simple okay we get away from Iran you get away from India but this can never happen Pakistan needs Iran to get a Road from Pakistan to Europe and USA needs India to counter China is SCS so I thinks that they will have good meals nice chat and go home. All this rush is due to the latest visit of Pakistani COAS to Iran and his interest in IRGC. If Pakistan also make a force like IRGC then it is highly likely that there will a new Libya and Syria in Asia.

lol Pakistan is making a free trade zone with Iran. Ahh ever hurting Saudi Propaganda in Pakistan.

Libya and Syria
Your concerns have reason, i can understand.

But if Libya and Syria had something like IRGC, nothing could happen to them. Libya had the least possible relations with Iran, in Syria due to weaknesses of it's army, and western-Arabic-Zionist dollars, also the idiot opposition, up to 70% of the country was taken over by ISIS-Nusra. KSA/UAE's bombing campaign played a significant role to destroy Libya.

It's almost 40 years that all of these destructive allies are threatening Iran of similar scenario, but what could they do btw?

Pakistani people are united fortunately, even your wahabis are ready to fight against aggressive powers.

I don't think that they can do something similar to Pakistan.

Lots of high profile visits from US to Pakistan after declaration of new South Asia Policy by Trump

I'll be happy, if there is free trade zone... if Iran is any bit serious to resolve misunderstandings, it should name chabahar as the free trade zone with Pakistan!

It's sad really, not just Iran he would want us to get away from China and Russia too. We can solve our India problem through Russia I think, Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline backed by Russia Gazprom with guarantees of keeping India's activity in Balochistan in check could work. After Pak's General's visit to Iran, it was reported that USA took a great disliking and warned Pakistan of not getting too close to Iran, I think America is also vary of this proposed IPI pipeline (Here is a report penned in 2008 by Trumps current South Asia advisor). The next great balancing act for Pakistan I think will be its Sino-Russian relations and not Sino-American. Pakistan should clearly object to any USA policy directed against any regional country (except India).

True,

Note that through working with Iran in Balochistan, that issue could end forever. Similar to Iran-Turkey-Iraq joint operation in Kurdistan.

Allowing UAE/KSA to have presence in Balochistan is a bold mistake, whilst UAE has defense pact with India and KSA has backdoor relations with Israelis.

You were completely right about that pipeline.
