Panetta Addresses Osprey, Territory Disputes in Japan Visit

The United States, in all cases of disputed territory involving Pacific waters, urges “calm and restraint on all sides,” the secretary said.

“United States policy with regards to these islands is well known, and obviously, we stand by our treaty obligations,” Panetta said. “But the United States, as a matter of policy, does not take a position with regards to competing sovereignty claims.”

It’s important that both sides in any dispute pursue diplomatic means to resolve differences, he added.

So this officially and publicly confirms that the US CBG and marines will show up at Diaoyudai when China invades.

Can't be 100% certain, I think its 50-50% chance. They backed off in case of Phillipines. Well now its about Japan, chances may increase towards 70-30 or higher, 70 being showing up at those islands (% are debatable).

Would like to know except US, which and how much, other nearby countries comes into this tussle. Cooperation shown to Japan may be reciprocated in future if these countries gets head to head on similar issues. No SCS nation can alone withstand China. Together these nations can push China for Mutually beneficial solution rather than making it Zero-Sum game.

They don’t need to show off like CN….guess, for evils like China they must be having something that they have not yet shared….I guess, F-22 can do all that dirty jobs for them but guess, there is much more to crush bigger state like China…..I want to see China dares and attack Japan…..it will be fun watching the demise of one of the worst and the most threatening communist regimes in the world having expansionist policies… So this regime must go at any cost and guess, US will do it again!!!

Panetta says: No our defenses treaties with other counties do not involve in sovereignty disputes. You miss the ball, Mr Korean.

The US obligation under the defense treaty is to protect and preserve the integrity of Japanese jurisdiction on all territories administered by Japan, which includes Diaoyudai. Accordingly, both Hillary Clinton and Leon Panetta repeatedly reiterated that Diaoyudai was covered under the defense treaty. Your denial doesn't make this legal obligation go away. On the other hand, the treaty doesn't cover the territories claimed but not administered by Japan, such as the Liancourt Rocks and the Kurils. In case of the Kurils, the US supports Japanese claims but the defense treaty doesn't cover because of the administration issue.

I know Chinese don't want to see US forces around the Diaoyudai on the day of showdown, but they will be there.

Whose side do you think the US will take when it comes to Dokdo? Btw, I think Dokdo belongs to Japan.

The Liancourt Rocks are covered by the US-Korea defense treaty but not by the US-Japan treaty for the same reason.

Haha why don't you call it by it's Korean name? Clearly you are more of an Agent for US propaganda than Korea itself. Just like how the US is using Korea for it's own benefit.

I m srprised by the behavior of U.S in east asia.I thought they will stand by japan and eat the chinese boats

The Diaoyutai is a disputed territory and Panetta clearly says the US defense treaty with Japan does not cover such territories. How clearer can that be.
