US-Vietnam discuss Nuclear deal - China concerned

The words gets divided into two parts
one side is US and allies
Other China and allies....

I don't think it's that simple.

It's not a big game of "good or evil", the world is now interconnected.

Cooperation is the future.

No one can doubt now that there is a great game being played in the world and now Asia is in the spotlight for sure like never before.

I think this is strong arm tactics from US to tell China to not play in Pakistan...Lets watch.. The fun starts...

I don't think so. Vietnam indicated its desire to generate 16000 MW of energy independent from the US, and as indicated by another poster, France, South Korea and Russia will be more than willing to step in to fulfill such a significant demand.

If anything, this will incentivize Sino-Pak nuclear cooperation even more, from a strategic perspective.

At the moment, AFAIK, Pakistan is China's largest customer for NPP's (if not the only) and therefore will be crucial in terms of the Chinese breaking into the NPP market - they can point to the successful operation of the CHASNUPP's, showcasing reliable Chinese nuclear technology, as a marketing tool.

If it's for peaceful purposes... I don't really see the problem.

Everyone has a right to domestic nuclear energy.

US opposition to civilian nuclear cooperation with Pakistan is over containing it and denying it technology, along with attempting to restrict Pakistani Fissile Material stockpiles, and end Pakistani blockage of the FMCT, which in its current form Pakistan considers unfair.

US accuses Pakistan of double dealing on Afghanistan while US is double dealing Pakistan with nuclear and arms deal with India. The US-Vietnam negotiation will not slow down China-Pakistan nuclear cooperation but instead will accelerate more broader cooperation. US is trying restrict Pakistan's nuclear capabilities will enhancing Indian capabilities. This American tactics are backfiring and negating any goodwill that US may have earned due to its $7.5 billion aid package to Pakistan for next five years.

The ball is in China's court now, the government needs to avoid knee-jerk reactions and work with friendlier South East Asia countries.

Vietnam's relationships with its neighbors ain't exactly good, if China can persuade other ASEAN countries that U.S is bent on upsetting the strategic balance in the South East Asia in an effort to contain China, then I see this nuclear deal as a free gift handed to China by the U.S.

Another dimension is the power struggle of the pro-US and pro-China factions in the Vietnamese Communist Party is intensifying before next year's party congress, if China openly oppose the deal it will only weaken the hand of pro-China factions.

So China needs to work quietly behind the scene and let Vietnam's neighbors like Cambodia and Laos to voice their concerns.

Is this deal some sort of a diplomatic tit for tat ? i mean as China proposed an agreement of a deal with Pakistan so US choose Vietnam as a bargaining chip ?

Just my POV

What the hell America. I swear you arm Vietnam, we'll arm the entire Middle-east, even the crazy ones lol.

But seriously, this is not cool. Vietnam hates China.

Like who..Iran? Everyone else including Syria and Lebanon to some extent are American allied or influenced.

I don't think the USA is doing this because of Pakistan-China nuclear dealing, it is because of Iran. The USA is wanting China to consider that its "blind eye" to Iranian nuclear activities can be met with nuclear activities fostered in its own backyard. Next might come increased nuclear weapons capability for South Korea or even Japan.

The logic follows make China really really pissed off, therefore it cooperates. Please don't give me the "making China see the error of its way" crap either, because we know how well that works.

How about some effective American diplomacy once in a while, just for the sheer novelty.

You want to know how many indigenously built nuclear reactors South Korea and Japan have right now, and how close they are to become nuclear weapon capable if they really want to?

Japan is a de facto nuclear power. People say that given the state of their civilian program it'll take them a year to assemble a nuclear device, but it seems too naive to me to assume that Japan wouldn't have made contingency plans to have everything 99% done for nuclear device.

Well, yes of course. But the USA could help both South Korea and Japan with thermonuclear (fusion) devices, miniaturization, MIRV and delivery vehicles (ballistic and cruse) as well as command and control systems for safety. How would China like them apples?
