US: There will be consequences for China's South China Sea militarization

Believe me, nobody would cry a tear if Ccp goes down the drain, neither in Vietnam nor in Taiwan. China will remain China regardless of changing of leadership. If you ask me, who can better represent Chinese civilization then my answer is clear: Taiwan. For most of Viet people, Taiwan is the true China.

I wish your homeland Taiwan all the best.

i hope you prepared to be disappointed in the decades to come

Why China’s Land Grab Is Backfiring on Beijing
Beijing is alarming its neighbors by building artificial islands in the South China Sea. From Tokyo to Jakarta, countries in the region are pushing back hard.
BY DAN DE LUCE, C.K. HICKEY, KEITH JOHNSON | DECEMBER 7, 2015, 4:29 PM

Japan is jettisoning decades of World War II pacifism. Communist Vietnam is buying arms from the United States, its old enemy. The Philippines is inviting U.S. forces back 25 years after kicking them out. Even tiny Singapore is getting in on the action, allowing U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft to use bases on its territory.

The culprit? China, whose expansive territorial claims in the South China Sea are triggering a wary and at times angry response by neighbors from Tokyo to Jakarta. Alarmed at what they see as Beijing’s bid to dominate the strategic waterway, nations there are spending billions on ships, submarines, planes, and other military hardware and actively seeking closer defense ties with Washington and with each other.

That’s good news for the Obama administration, whose vaunted “rebalance to Asia” has been hampered by upheaval in the Middle East. Now, China’s land grab is rejuvenating the American effort, clearing the way for the United States to sell billions of advanced weaponry to China’s neighbors, while spending $250 million of its own money on new hardware like patrol ships, better surveillance, and communications gear.

Here is an interactive map that illustrates why so many countries are worried about China’s actions in the South China Sea. From Hainan Island just off the Chinese coast to militarized outposts in the Spratly and Paracel island groups, China has sketched a triangle of potential domination which could enable air defense zones, aggressive naval patrols, and radar and air defense stations.

Old article, but I believe it is relevant reading. While it does make spurious claims* it outlines the problem with China's approach.

*(Indonesian defence pact with Vietnam and Japan is bullishit, it's not a self-defence pact, just cooperation in training and arms trade.)

As Indonesian, I tend to be supportive of most of the stuff China does, the SCS drama isn't one of them.

Yes, Maritime borders are a pain in the ***, as a citizen of an archipelagic nation, I'm well aware of that. Problem is, there are certain absolutes when it comes to squabbling.

One of them being: "Do not extend your claim into another nation's EEZ, unless said sea area can be rightfully claimed as part of your EEZ as well."

See image:

And no. "Building artificial islands to extend your EEZ" is blatant cheating.

It becomes especially grating when we have to deal with China claiming that our EEZ is "Traditional Chinese Fishing Grounds". Prior to this, Indonesia was more than willing to sit on the bylines since we have repeatedly stressed that we are not a claimant of the South China Sea.

For decades, Indonesia’s official policy has been that it is not a party to any territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea, unlike its regional neighbors Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Last year, however, Indonesia and China had the three maritime skirmishes within Indonesia’s 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone off its Natuna Islands, which lie northwest of Borneo.

Indonesia, the grouping’s (ASEAN) largest member and de facto leader, had in the past remained on the sidelines of the various South China Sea disputes and offered to help mediate between Asean claimant states and Beijing.
New York Times

Problem is, the 9-dash line is... excessive and even claims Indonesian EEZ, which extends from Natuna, an inhabited island.
Indonesia doesn't want trouble, but China knocked in such a way that even a non-claimant nation had its sovereignty infringed.

Which resulted in:
..Jakarta’s decision in July to rename its portion of the South China Sea to the North Natuna Sea.
Jakarta’s outlining of the steps it is taking in the renaming – including steps like registering it with the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) – have so far been completely in line with international law.
The Diplomat

China is making its own problems, and any headache it gets from the SCS is one it clearly deserves.

Article from 2015? :P

Can you tell me what happened with the Philippines since then, i.e. Duterte and his pro-China administration?

In fact, since 2015, Vietnam is now the ONLY member of ASEAN to openly oppose China in the SCS.

It was quite nice to read the article in hindsight.

There wouldn’t be any red blood white Anglo American waste their their time in Pakistan forum interact in the Asia discussions.
This guy has proved himself not a slumdog but a redneck who stays all day and night bashing China... which is also pathetic...
That picture can be his neighbor for all we know.

Well, Indonesia isn't happy with it either. There have been developments as recent as March, including our renaming of our maritime territory. Thing is, both China and Indonesia are mature enough to remain businesslike, which means that we still received OBOR investments.

Which is good.

While it is true that Philippines is no longer making a huge ruckus, instead it is just 'quietly' developing extraction operations in Reed Bank, despite overlapping claims with China. So far, China has not been able to meaningfully intervene.

I'm not forecasting China's downfall, just pointing out that when you act like a bully, expect to be treated as one. The SCS will be a source of diplomatic frustrations for China for a long time to come.

LOL do you know who started reclaiming land in the SCS several decades ago? It wasn't China.

As for diplomatic frustrations, like I said Vietnam is now the ONLY country in ASEAN to openly oppose China's construction in the SCS. That sounds like a win to me, plus we get to keep building and militarizing the islands.

True, after the surrender of the Philippines it is only Vietnam that can stop China imperialism in the region. Japan is especially vulnerable because their economy relies on open sea. We are the last hope for the people of Japan.

Lol... " openly oppose " does not mean you can stop it. you little clown...

. .
Sure, just like Scarborough Shoal.

Sure, just like Obama's "red lines" in the South China Sea.

Sure, just like Rex Tillerson US defence secretary promising to "block China's access to the SCS islands".

He's been long fired, and he never even mentioned it again.

US is trying hard... at the end of the day They were unable to handle Kim Jong... and ready for talks...

and now they are issuing threats to China...

Game on...

Vietnamese overrated themselves by island reclamation. Then China over muscle them in reclamation so they cry to Uncle Sam. That is the Vietnamese way.

I became emotional? So I tell you I'm not Indian

Sounds like a typical story copied from the history book... Why don't you just say your grand grand grand... parents took the May Flower to get to "America"... Haha..

Another excuse...
I have a feeling he's an immigrant from South East Asia or a Nippon Ren pretending to be American. He doesn't speak like an American.
All that BS he wrote doesn't prove one bit he's an American.

Do something like this will be good enough:

The sooner you do this the better we will believe that it is actually done by yourself... Anything else is just your excuses, and nobody cares...
That proves nothing bro. I can get a white skin with a snap of a finger.

China is not Afghanistan or Iraq
You guys are all arguing for nothing this post says it in ONE LINE.
Nice post, brother.

Lol... " openly oppose " does not mean you can stop it. you little clown...
We know your dirty plot: once you control the SC sea, China will blackmail Japan to return the Senkakus otherwise a total sea blockade will be imposed over Japan. Millions of Japanese children and babies will die because of hunger and starvation.

The Japanese can rely on Vietnam: we will never let that to happen.

As for your rediculous comment: underestimate Vietnam military is a mistake. You should have leaned it from history by numerous encounters.

Not entirely true.
China do not intend to claim ALL of SCS.
Only the area covered by EEZ. Yes China do have EEZ in SCS
Malaysia actually do not have much problem with China. Only with Vietnamese who occupied 3 features within our EEZ.
