What's new

US played key role in release of Abhinandan

SO IMRAN LIED THAT IT WAS A GOOD WILL GESTURE?

DIDNT EXPECT ANYTHING ELSE EITHER======= CAS ONCE IN OFFICE------- THEY ALL BECOME PATHETICAL LIERS
It's an Indian article, do not take it seriously. There is no evidence to suggest that any foreign pressure was behind this.

Yadav has been in Pakistan for years now and no amount of whining, complaining or moaning from across the border has been able to free him.

You believe an Indian newspaper? How pathetic it could get!! India is a fake news factory.

If Pakistan had to give in to US pressure, Pakistan would have given up its position on Afghanistan a long time ago.
Afghanistan is a complicated matter, and beyond the capacity of both US and Pakistan to control on the whole. US need to deploy a much bigger contingent to control Afghanistan at present, but Trump administration wants out. Therefore, negotiations have commenced.

Pakistan is not immune to international pressures otherwise. Take a look at Pakistan's economy for instance; do you think we can hold our ground on every matter?

Mike Pompeo played a major role in diffusing tensions between Pakistan and India recently (Shah Mahmood Qureshi confirmed this), and release of Indian pilot was part of the deal.

This is a fabricated story by the US. Believe it or not, Pakistan does not listen to US or anyone except just one country and that is China. In fact it was after the Chinese FM who had discussions with Pakistan and then also India. It was only then that the Indian pilot was released to de-escalate.
You do not know much.

US is the most powerful country in the world, and only it can knock sense into India. China does not stand much of a chance in this case although Chinese mediation is appreciated.

India was riding on the high-horse of 'US containing China' for a while, but then Americans and Indians found some differences of their own. This is apparent from the fact that Donald Trump signaled revoking trading concessions to India recently.

Ouch, I would say.

Quite possibly.

I was only commenting on the unconsciously artless innocence of that post, and its unwitting revelations.

Yeah, right.

And, as happened in 1999, found Daddy with somebody already on his lap.

Got it.

Pakistan didn't decide on Wg. Cdr. Varthaman's release; she was arm-twisted into it. It is absolutely wrong to claim that this arm-twisting was done by her former partner, the US. This time, it was her current mate, China.

Yes, of course. What a clever thing to do; and imagine having to learn it from you. Have to hand it to you for your vast experience of seventy years of holding on to someone else's hair.

Actually, every country seems to want to take credit for "resolving" the Indo-Pak tension. US says it was responsible, Saudi says it is responsible, China says it is responsible, etc. Although we may eventually find out more details, it is clear releasing Abhinandan was the best option for IK for two reasons.

1.- PR. Releasing him as a goodwill gesture would make Pakistan look good in front of the world and change the narrative about the conflict, which had mostly been about Pakistan harboring terrorists against India.
2- the possibility of Indian retaliation. I think it is clear that India did not take Pak as seriously as it should have, which is probably why it sent its weakest jet wheras Pak brought it best. Also keep in mind that what the PAF did was essentially set a trap for the IAF by dropping bombs on empty ground then flying back over the loc, baiting the IAF to chase after them. Obviously, India would not make those mistakes again. The fact is it is hard to say exactly what India would have done if Abhinandan was not returned, but that was a chance IK could not take, as India's conventional military strength is ahead of Pakistan's and Pakistan was clearly not ready for further escalation. It is no coincidence that IK's decision came just as India was mobilizing the full strength of its army, air force, and Navy(PAkistan's weakest link) near Pak's borders.

Fortuantely, Imran Khan handled that pretty well, and avoided a dangerous situation for both countries.

Also, I think some people are overestimating how much attention this got internationally. The fact that Cohen got more attention in the US shows that the world only took notice when there was the faintest possibility the N- word could be brought up. Now that the world knows we are not that dumb, it is business as usual.

In the past the usa would publicly offer carrots the Pakistan and privately pressure Pakistan. Things have changed now, the USA is publicly pressuring Pakistan but offering carrots behind the scenes.
Trump admin has concluded that it's think tanks and generals don't know squat about the region and are no longer following the prescribed script.

Pakistan was not ready to 'give in' but US made it clear that the Wg Cdr won't be a 'bargaining chip'

The United States weighed in on the Pakistan Army through high-level military channels to release Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman within hours of his capture on February 27, making it clear to Rawalpindi that it was the only way to de-escalate matters.

AS reliably gathered that at the instance of Washington, US Centcom Commander Gen. Joseph Votel spoke to Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa “encouraging him” to release Wing Commander Abhinandan at the earliest.

Centcom Commander is the principal interface for the Pakistan Army Chief with the US. Centcom is responsible for operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan and is involved in facilitating the diplomatic effort to engage the Taliban.

The communication loop on the US end, sources said, was largely between Gen Votel and National Security Advisor John Bolton, who was in regular touch with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval. He, however, let Gen Votel handle the channel with the Pakistan Army.

The US message was reinforced by the United Kingdom, which has “deep influence” with the Pakistan Army. The US interlocutors, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Joseph Dunford , who also spoke to his Pakistan counterpart Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat, made it clear that Washington saw the Pakistan action after India’s counter-terrorism strike on Balakot as escalatory.

Gen Votel’s message opened several other channels of communication through which a constant message was put .. that Pakistan must release Wing Commander Abhinandan without delay, said sources.

However, sources said, there was considerable pressure within the Pakistan system not to “give in” as a captured Indian pilot was a “prize catch” in a warlike situation. US military interlocutors, on the other hand, told Pakistan Army that it would not endorse the use of Wing Commander Abhinandan as a “bargaining chip”

India, meanwhile, had moved up its forces and asked Washington to ensure that Wing Commander Abhinandan was treated with dignity. At some point in constant conversation, the Pakistan Army agreed in consultation with its government. And while Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s announcement was welcome, there was fair amount of tension on the day Wing Commander Abhinandan was to walk across the Wagah border.

Suddenly, sources said, there was a message from some quarters in Pakistan that ..L egal obstacles” had to be cleared.

Those in the know of details told that the day was spent again in pushing Pakistani officials at all levels to not delay the release at the last moment. It was only after hours of repeated conversations between American and Pakistani officials that the release was finally facilitated,

So US came to the rescue of little India? I guess the Americans, being the sole superpower, have to do all this to help the weaker countries.

Though I do hope that the Indian people too realise that nationalistic bravado alone is not enough to take on superior foes like Pakistan. But I guess they've learned their lesson.
