US panel calls for Pakistan membership of G-20

Read it as a whole...
According to the article ,The US wants to engage pakistan not because of its economy but because of its importance to current security scenario and its effect on the world economy ,read the second paragraph it says to engage pakistan to “to connect with new power structures and familiarise it with emerging norms and responsible international behaviour”.
Economically ,with all due respect ,pakistan can do very little on the G20,i.e. small GDP and all, but pakistan happens to be in a region where the US has huge trillion $$ worth of stakes and thus the sole US push to bring pakistan to the forum.

Some people here are bringing up India, even though it has nothing to do with them.

Please stop comparing India to Pakistan, and remember it wasn't Pakistan that called for our membership.

Might as well have Somalia, Guinea, Mali, Chad, Nigeria, Sierra Leone part of the G20 as well, I've heard they'll each become Regional/Global Powers within the next couple of years..

No wonder Americans are considered to have the least General Knowledge in the world.
I would write a detailed rebuttal but your blatant lack of basic knowledge about Pakistan makes me realize that you would not get a word of it, so I might as well explain it to a wall.
If you want to learn something about Pakistan, come back to the forum when you are 16.

Because they all have better economies than Pakistan. After all G20 is an economic forum not the political one. Won't they would all want to join G20 if Pakistan is allowed..Get it..

Better economy is just one aspect, there are many others like the ones mentioned by the US panel who thinks US should support Pakistans membership for the G-20 and besides you make it sound as if Pakistans economy will stay the same forever.
It has nothing to do with the other 25 countries.
One more thing G-20 maybe an economical forum, but it all comes down to political clout. If major powers back us up, the very same powers have enough political clout to make sure the other 25 countries have no problem with that.
The only country that will however have problem with us joining the G-20 is our next door neighbor.

I highly doubt hes an american, his Indian colors are visible even below the american disguise.

Don't kid yourself. India is far more stable than Pakistan. There is a reason why Pakistan is in the Top 10 failed states and India is not even in the Top 50.

Furthermore, India has the world's fourth largest economy in PPP terms, one-sixth of the world's population, and one of the most powerful armed forces in the world. That is a pretty good resume to apply for UNSC.

That still means that there are 25 countries with larger economies than Pakistan. Is this a G20 or a G26, lol.

Pretty good resume but I believe that there are MORE deserving nations in line. Germany, Japan, among others.

Guys! check this from wiki:

about membership into G20:
"In a forum such as the G-20, it is particularly important for the number of countries involved to be restricted and fixed to ensure the effectiveness and continuity of its activity. There are no formal criteria for G-20 membership and the composition of the group has remained unchanged since it was established. In view of the objectives of the G-20, it was considered important that countries and regions of systemic significance for the international financial system be included. Aspects such as geographical balance and population representation also played a major part."

I guess the bolded part explains the inclusion of Pakistan,

Welcome this move from the perspective it"ll make Pakistan a more responsible nation.

Well its true, that both Japan and Germany have a larger economic clout than India, but the question when did both these nations play a positive role on the global stage?

The last time they played a role on global stage was during WW2 as axis, and that was a very negative one.

The only time India played global positive role was during the cold-war era,the NAM movement, where we advocated ending colonialism/imperialism and not aligning with the power blocks.
This role won India many nations(especially 3rd world ) attention and respect(though it was lost after 1962).
For that reason both African and Asian nations support us.

Also Germany and Japan both are blocked by P5 members itself.

Just 1 statement in reply to you which Obama gave in India.
Thanks to Obama that now we dont have to give counter Arguments to Mis Informed and Brain washed people like you after doing lenthy researches.

"Pakistan is most important country for the world".

One thing that has to be made clear here is that US was our first ally when our country was born, it helped nurture our country to arguably the most progressive in Asia and our own did a lot too to make it workable and least corrupt within our continent.

The problems arose when we went ahead with our war plan against India which in retrospect was a bad idea but when the country was being run by the military and men who were eager to fight, it was unavoidable. Bhutto made mistakes and opted for Pan-Islamism which alienated the west and brought the extremists close to us. Zia was the first one to combine the worst of both, he played the Islamic card and took orders from the west to no benefit to us.

US in general and especially many of its senators and people who know Pakistan are very much in favor of Pakistan. They have a large presence in our country which reduced in last few decades but is picking up again and if we play our cards right, we could turn Pakistan around to the country it was envisioned to be and the country it was gearing up to be in the 60's.

Like an article stated that Pakistani's till the 90's used to consider themselves an extension of the west in Asia but the post 9/11 scenario turned them towards the gulf region. But as we see the increasing extremism and intolerance because of our close following of the middle eastern nations. The people would love to be back in those days where they felt closer to the west especially US.

US is willing to help if we help them, our establishment has always been in awe of the western lifestyle and its ideals. Ask any sane person, he would rather opt for a society like a western country for his own nation than a myopic mullah fascist state.

In my humble opinion, we need to reintegrate with the west and go back to the way we were. I prefer those times to anything that has happened in the last decade and took root from the late 70's.

The suggestion coming from a very experienced US penal and we need to work on this Pakistan economy will certainly improve if we become member of G-20.

I can name at least 7, friends of Pakistan China, US, Saudi, Turkey, France, Brazil, Italy on the top of my head, and probably others that would be happy for us to be on that forum.

26th biggest economy by GDP PPP, 45th biggest by nominal GDP, 170 million people in the most strategic real estate in the world, on the borders of China, Central Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East, a huge and prosperous expat community and diaspora, one of the largest and influential Armed Forces in the world. Last but not least A nuclear weapons state. :)

I absolutely agree with you but I just wanted to make it a point to the poster I had replied to, I would personally say that Pakistan is not ready for being a part of G-20, first we have to be worthy enough to be declared a BRIC nation and stop being an aid driven economy(with the exception of right now, since we took a lot of damage from the floods). India on the other hand does hold the credentials essential for G-20 membership and I for one would support a chance for India to be made a part of G-20(but not the UNSC seat mind you, I have reservations against that). As for Japan and Germany, apart from their checkered pasts, they are now playing a very positive role on the global stage, Japan is an innovative, electronics giant and Germany is the production capital of europe, also a major contributer to the mission in Afghanistan. So in my humble opinion, they also do hold potential.

It looks like a deal to make Pakistan happy to side with US for the WoT.
But I feel a better and stable economy for Pakistan will be helpful for India as well.

Rafi you are right , If U.S and the world is supporting Pakistan , it is because of the stretigic importance , present economy and the near future economic potential of pakistan. At present we are fighting a war against terrorism , Even in this scenerio , our GDP is growing at about 4% rate , I am sure we have a lot more potential , As the things are going on in (US pulling back from Afghanistan), it would not be very difficult to maintain an average of 8% raise in GDP. We had an average GDP growth of 7 to 8% from2002 to 2008.
