US President Donald Trump has designated Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organisation.

It is the first time the US has labelled another nation's military as a terrorist organisation.

The White House said the IRGC was Iran's primary means of "implementing its global terrorist campaign".

Washington-Tehran tensions have risen since Mr Trump withdrew the US from the international Iran nuclear pact.

The US has sanctioned parts of the IRGC before, including its elite Quds Force intelligence unit.

"This unprecedented step, led by the Department of State, recognises the reality that Iran is not only a State Sponsor of Terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft," Mr Trump said in a statement on Monday.

The president added that the move was meant to "significantly expand the scope and scale" of pressure on Iran.

"If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism," Mr Trump said.

Aren't the IRGC already heavily sanctioned? Either way that is still a big development and I don't see the US administration stopping here. Makes me wonder what others steps are in mind? US will not go to war with Iran without some of Arab allies partaking in such an operation. Saudi Arabia cannot sustain a war with Iran. Iran will deteriorate as well. The biggest losers will be Iranians, Iraqi's and Saudi Arabians.

Qatar/Turkey role would will be important in such a scenario.

Iran can't get back at the US. US has the advantage in the region and they won't suffer big economic cost however Iran responds to this. If Iran feels threatened it can only get back by destabilizing Saudi Arabia which will have domino effect on region. And affect global economy.

in the event of war no country in ME will allow US to use there soil to attack Iran. All of them have friendly relations with Iran or out of fear, you can ask everyone knows this.
