US Navy ship targeted in failed missile attack from Yemen: US military

http://www.arabnews.com/node/1003366/saudi-arabia

US Vice Admiral Kevin Donegan told reporters at an undisclosed military base in Southwest Asia: “Either US ships or coalition ships... intercepted four weapon shipments from Iran to Yemen. We know they came from Iran and we know the destination.”
Donegal said the shipments contained thousands of AK-47 assault rifles, anti-tank missiles, sniper rifles and “other pieces of equipment (and) higher-end weapons systems.”

Naval officials were able to determine the destination of the boats by analyzing GPS settings and interviewing the crew. One of the shipments had been declared an illegal weapon shipment by the UN, said Donegal.

“We believe that Iran is connected to this in some way,” Donegan said.

Given the heavy traffic around the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf, the three-star admiral said “plenty” of other shipments would have gone through to Yemen.

In April 2015, Iran tried to send a convoy of seven ships, guarded by two Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps vessels, to Yemen.

Donegan said these were filled with coastal-defense cruise missiles, explosives and other weapons.
First IRGC have no ship that can operate outside Persian gulf and sea of Oman , second that convoy was humanitarian aid that was not distributed by Iran it handed to UN official and if anybody claim that convoy was weapon they are saying UN is helping Iran smuggling weapons into Yemen. I guess this is enough to show how credible this news and it's sources are.

by the way US official many times as this time claimed about Iran sending weapon but failed to show evidence of Iran involvement ,they as usual say they believe or they think . and I wonder why always there must be something undisclosed about such news about Iran either its undisclosed base or unnamed officials or anonymous source ?

This is an official statement of US Navy Vice Admiral .

Arab coalition helicopters and naval units intercepted two boats off the port of Salif, north of Hudaydah, Yemen. — File photo

Aden — Arab coalition helicopters and naval units intercepted two boats off the port of Salif, north of the Hudaydah governorate in the Red Sea and forced them to stop for inspection and found arms, ammunition and modern telecommunications equipment on board.

This comes two days after the coalition’s air force destroyed two boats at the entrance of the Salif port for smuggling weapons to Houthi militias.

According to the media center of the popular resistance in the Hudaydah governorate, the smugglers who were on the two boats were interrogated and confessed that they were on their way from Iranian regional waters to the Yemeni Salif port to deliver the load to the Houthis.

Surveillance and investigative operations revealed that militias are using a number of islands, such as Zagar and Hanish, to smuggle arms and equipment with the help of Iran.

After the coalition forces imposed their control on these two islands earlier this year, the militias used the Kamaran island, which is close to the Hudaydah port and which is the only inhabited island.

Iranian smuggling ships either unload their cargo in these islands or in militias’ boats in the sea to later be transferred to western shores in Yemen.

A number of western reports revealed that arms have been smuggled through the area of Zabab, 30 kilometers north of Bab al-Mandeb, and the Mocha port, 60 kilometers north of Bab Al-Mandeb and west of the Taiz governorate. Arms have also been smuggled through Hudaydah such as through al-Khoukha which is 90 kilometers north of Bab of al-Mandeb and through the major Hudaydah port.

And most recently, smuggling operations were detected through al-Salif port which is 70 kilometers north of the Hudaydah port.

According to local and international reports, smuggling operations included thermal rockets, ammunition, spare parts and huge missiles that were unloaded from Iranian ships in the middle of the sea in the Gulf of Aden on medium-sized boats which most of the time unloaded in the Mocha and Hudaydah ports despite the surveillance imposed by coalition forces on the western shores of Yemen. — Al Arabiya English

RIYADH: International investigators have found a suspected “weapon pipeline” from Iran through Somalia to Yemen where Shiite rebels are battling the government, according to a report released on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia and the United States have accused Iran of arming the Houthi rebels in Yemen, but Tehran denies the charges.

Since March last year Riyadh has led an Arab coalition fighting the Houthis and their allies in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized president, Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, after the rebels overran much of the country.

The analysis by Conflict Armament Research (CAR) is based on the seizure in February and March this year of weapons from dhows, traditional sailing vessels, in the Arabian Sea.

British-based CAR, which is primarily funded by the European Union, analyzed photographs of weapons confiscated from the dhows by the Australian warship HMAS Darwin and the French frigate FS Provence.

The ships were part of a joint international task force that operates separately from the Saudi coalition.

HMAS Darwin seized more than 2,000 weapons, including AK-type assault rifles and 100 Iranian-manufactured rocket launchers, from the dhow bound for Somalia, CAR said.

The seizure by FS Provence included 2,000 assault rifles “characteristic of Iranian manufacture” and 64 Hoshdar-M Iranian-made sniper rifles, all of which were in new condition, CAR said.

There were also nine Russian-made Kornet anti-tank guided missiles, it said.

UAE forces within the Saudi-led coalition reported recovering in Yemen a Kornet which CAR said is part of “the same production run” as those on the dhow.

This “supports allegations that the weapons originated in Iran and that the dhow’s cargo was destined for Yemen,” CAR said.

French government sources said the dhow was headed to Somalia “for possible transhipment to Yemen,” CAR said.
Light machine guns, suspected to be North Korean made, were found with the same serial number sequence on both dhows, “which suggests that the materiel derived from the same original consignment,” the report added.

It also referred to the US Navy’s seizure from a dhow in March of AK-type assault rifles, rocket launchers and machine guns which the US believed “orginated in Iran and were destined for Yemen.”

Two of the dhows were made by Al Mansoor of Iran, CAR said.

Although their findings were “relatively limited,” the investigators said their analysis “suggests the existence of a weapon pipeline extending from Iran to Somalia and Yemen.”

This involves “significant quantities of Iranian-manufactured weapons and weapons that plausibly derive from Iranian stockpiles,” they said.

It said that traffickers offload weapons in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in northern Somalia “for local arms markets or as transhipment points for onward supply to Yemen.”

Other analysts have questioned the extent of Tehran’s influence over the Houthis, a minority group which fought six wars against Yemen’s government from 2004 to 2010.

WASHINGTON: An Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard vessel pointed its weapon at a US military helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, two US defense officials said on Monday, an action they described as “unsafe and unprofessional.”

The officials added: “The behavior by our standards is provocative and could be seen as an escalation.” At no point did the crew of the helicopter feel threatened, they said.

The incident is the latest in a series of similar actions by Iranian vessels this year, but the first reported since Donald Trump won the US presidential election earlier this month.

During his campaign, Trump vowed that any Iranian vessel that harassed the US Navy in the Gulf would be “shot out of the water,” if he was elected. Trump is due to take office on Jan. 20.

An Iranian military official said the US military presence in the Gulf poses the main risk of conflict in the region.
"Everybody knows that the main problem in the Gulf is the US presence," an unidentified official in the Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.

The official said all international vessels were plying the Strait of Hormuz — through which 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil is shipped — with no difficulty and it was only the Americans who complained by making false cases against Iran.

He further called the US behavior "improper and unprofessional", but did not address the allegation that the IRGC vessel aimed its guns at the helicopter.

Several similar incidents have occurred this year. In September, a US Navy coastal patrol ship changed course after an Iranian fast-attack craft came within 90 metres of it.

American and Saudi goons must get lost from Yemen. It will be just another failed war like Vietnam and these two monsters will pay in future.

Is your source as ridiculous as yourself?
No one can enter our naval ships. They will be shot in the azz if they get close to our naval forces. Who has the guts of doing that Hindustani?

Dhow’s cargo was destined for Yemen or you mean to say that Iranian Forces will deliver weapons directly to Houthis directly similar like the Russian Federation weapons delivery to Syrians ?
