US Navy set to begin patrols near China's man made islands

Yeah sure, but back to China stating that American warships nor planes can't fly there. And you stated they never stated it. Well here we are...

Yes, and they are waned not to fly. If flying does not serve the purpose (stopping China's activities), we can live with the situation until the next stage.

I don't care if you have 10 stages in attempt to stop foreign warships from navigating the South China Sea.

I do not care how much navigation you enjoy as long as China's development program continues unhampered.

I guess everybody is happy now.

Shrugs* All we know is that China is not happy with American warships navigating in their so called territorial waters of the whole South China Sea as stated by your govt. You can build as many islands you want, but it ain't going to do crap if it doesn't complete its objectives.

Hence you plan your next stage and the one after as you say.

US is gonna leave the smaller countries involved in SCS dispute high and dry, just the matter of time.

The thing is any country would pursue self preservation over upholding principles.

Well Played China - You guys bid you time, became a super power both politically and militarily, formed alliances with anti-US forces world over, got Russia at your side.

Most we will see is meaning less patrols and impotent rhetoric from US while China makes concrete gains on ground.

SCS game is already over, western media will take sometime to catch up that is all.

Important lesson here for Ukraine, Israel, Middle East, S. Korea, EU, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines and India - Don't rely on US ever!! Build up your own capacity and defense - when times get tough no one is gonna come and help you. There is no more appetite for war with equals in US Establishment. Ukraine, Syria, Georgia, SCS and some other recent incidents has proved it clearly. Whenever even a moderately powerful state like Iran confronts US - US backs off - most it can do is to apply sanctions which would be self destructive for US in case of China even in case of Russia it is not working clearly

Precisely, my friend.

Better to prepare for a storm than be caught high and dry in an open rice field. ;)

As the old Japanese saying goes.

Frankly I do not know what many of these dispute is all about? I start with Japan.

Take the case of Japan which claimed Diaoyutai as its historical territory vs China. All historians including the Japanese will tells us that Meiji's Japan under the annexed the independent Kingdom of Ryuku in 1879 and renamed it as the Okinawa Perfecture. Next an militant Japan annexed Taiwan and its surrounding islands from China under the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895. The milestone is Diaoyutai read 1895. There is no dispute about that. Even the name Shenkaku did not existed before 1895.

Did USA knew all this. At first they claimed it was a clerical error then because China has turned communist, they twisted the fact again to favor her subservient vassal state called Japan today.

As for Japan, face it, by merely returning the island back to China, she would have save herself all the security problems she created for herself today. There will no longer be a territorial dispute between China and Japan.

What is Abe thinking? That is why Abe is having a very tough time trying to convince the rest of the world especially her former victims in Asia that is being bullied or victimised by China. Her WW2 track records say it all.
In Sandakan, 3600 Australian POW started marching to their detection camp during WW2. Only 36 survived.

Where would all these leads to? IMO China will or may eventually soon voice its support the INDEPENDENCE for the Kingdom of Ryuku. The Kingdom of Ryuku in hostory used to be a tributary state of China.

In any case, the native of Okinawa or Okinawan are treated like second class citizen of Japan. That would completely eliminated the Diaoyutai dispute.

Good strategy???

Some of these Independence protesters are pro-China.

You underestimate the US and its commitment to its treaty allies and its treaty obligations.

Some country's/ regional groupings you have listed have no reason to expect the US to come to their aid, others the US is very likely to aid due to treaty obligations.

otherwise I agree, no country should make another country the cornerstone of its defense, even if they are in a military alliance...it is playing with fire, and even the safest looking fire can burn you.

That is not to say that a military alliance does not greatly enhance your deterrent, but be prepared.
Always be prepared to make the enemy pay on your own.

Japan has been a special case, otherwise there is no excuse from any of the country's named to not have a reliable self financed military deterrent.

The best country to rely on for defense matters, no matter what anyone says, is your own.

Thank you, many countries indeed have no formal mutual defense treaty with US but at the same time rely on US with whom they see a common interest against a mutual adversary. I am amazed at the stupidity of such countries.

This is great news for China! We often conduct live fire exercises within our territorial waters in the South China Sea. If a trespassing USA ship were sunk "accidentally" too bad for them. We can scoop up the wreakage and corpses.

The only way you going to accidentally sunk them is to ram them.
