Actually, when one thinks about this issue, the US military is
NOT the ideal model to follow.
The US military was designed, probably by accident, and operated as an expeditionary force, meaning we are constantly 'Visitors' and not 'Home'. Never mind 1812, no one really made it to CONUS and fought the US military. Then given the retreats from SE Asia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, the US military can arguably be considered as a failure, as in unable to support political goals.
Now, the best model to follow is the Parade Line Army (PLA). Most of the world's militaries are usually, if not always, use as an adjunct to internal police forces mainly because most of the world's countries are variations of dictatorships. China spends more on internal security than on the PLA. The PLA have more experience at putting down riots, civil arrests, interrogations, and investigations of political dissent, all the main skills at supporting the current political leadership.
In sum, if your military is not expeditionary in design,
DO NOT follow the US model but take after the PLA version.
