KABUL, Afghanistan — A United States Army major general was killed on Tuesday by an Afghan soldier, shot at close range at a military training academy on the outskirts of Kabul, officials of the American-led coalition said Tuesday. The officer was the highest-ranking member of the American military to die in hostilities in the Afghanistan war.

The coalition officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity and would not release the name of the major general, said an unspecified number of other service members of the American-led coalition and Afghan soldiers, including a senior Afghan commander, also were shot. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Other details of the shooting were sketchy, and the coalition, in an official statement, would only confirm that one of its service members had been killed in what it described as “an incident” at the Marshall Fahim National Defense University in Kabul. The coalition declined to specify any further details, saying it was still working to notify the family of the deceased

A two-star American general has been killed and 14 others injured in an attack at the military training academy in Afghanistan, according to media reports.

A man dressed in an Afghan army uniform opened fire on NATO troops on Tuesday. A German brigadier general was seriously injured and an American two-star general was killed in the shootout, reported Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine.

American officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to the Associated Press that an American two-star general was killed in an apparent insider attack by a member of the Afghan security forces. The attacker wounded about 15 people roughly half of whom were Americans, one official told the agency.

ABC News also cited in its report a US official who described the shooting victim as “a two star major general.” The Pentagon told the agency that in addition to one fatality, 15 ISAF personnel were injured.

"We are in the process of assessing the situation," the ISAF Joint Command said in a statement. "More information will be released as we sort out the facts."

The German brigadier-general is “not in a life-threatening condition,” German military said as cited by the AP.

ISAF, in a statement obtained by RT, confirmed that an incident occurred on Tuesday involving local Afghan and ISAF troops at The Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul City, Afghanistan.

This facility was incorrectly named Camp Qargha in an earlier ISAF release.

“At this time, ISAF can confirm one ISAF service member was killed. This incident is under investigation,” the ISAF said. “It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification to the relevant national authorities,” it added.

The American major general was shot by an Afghan soldier at close range, writes the New York Times, citing an official from the American-led coalition and Afghan media. The officer, the paper adds, was the highest-ranking member of the US military to die in hostilities in the Afghanistan war.

The unnamed source in the coalition also said that an unspecified number of other coalition service members and Afghan soldiers, including a senior Afghan commander were also shot. No details regarding their conditions have so far been released.

According to reports, the incident occurred around noon, but details of the attack were not immediately clear. Gen. Mohammmad Zahir Azimi, a spokesman for Afghanistan's Defense Ministry, said a "terrorist in an army uniform" opened fire on both local and international troops. Azimi said the shooter was killed and added that three Afghan army officers were wounded.

NATO said in a statement that it was “in the process of assessing the situation.”

So far, the motivation for the attack remains unclear.

The so-called green-on-blue, or insider attacks, where Afghan soldiers opened fire on NATO troops, have been common during the Afghan campaign. In 2013, there were 16 deaths in 10 separate attacks, while a year before 53 coalition troops were killed in 38 such attacks, according to AP.
