US blocks sale of German APCs to Pakistan

Islamabad: Annoyed over the peace talks Islamabad is conducting with Taliban rebels in the country's restive northern areas bordering Afghanistan, the US has barred a German firm from selling 800 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) to the Pakistan Army.

The US State Department had earlier approved the sale of the APCs, being manufactured under licence in Germany.

"But, now all of sudden, it has reviewed its decision. The only consideration behind this move is the recent peace deals in the tribal areas of Pakistan, as the Americans were found to be annoyed with the new government at Islamabad," The News reported Friday.

This move is being seen as an attempt to put pressure on the new leadership of the Pakistan Army so that it opposes peace deals with Taliban elements in the tribal and other parts of NWFP.

The APC deal had once before been put on hold due to sanctions imposed by the European Union after President Musharraf declared an emergency, sacked the Supreme Court and high court judges and suspended basic human rights.

The sanctions were lifted after a civilian government assumed office in Pakistan. The German firm was preparing to fulfill the order when the US State Department stepped in.

How can the Germans let the US order German companies around? Don't they have any self esteem? :tsk:

basturds Americans are in action pnce again if this news is true. Another eye opener for the Pakistani People and most importantly the armed forces.

My friend Skywalker,

Let me ask you, an eye opener to do what? Let me also ask you as an example, would Pakistan continue to equip Afghans if she felt that there was a threat to Pakistan emanating from Afghanistan? No! we would try to rectify the situation by pushing, prodding and potentially rewarding (carrot and stick policy). The same goes for the Americans in dealing with Pakistan.

Think about these issues from the standpoint of convergence or divergence of interests instead of emotionally.

the US holds the licence so it can do what has been mentioned in the above thread. in my opinion it is temporary as Mr, negroponte arrives in pakistan next week. u can bet your bottom $ that kiyani is going to take him to task.

no problem sir - anyway PA got plenty of these APCs. this was a deal to get 800 pieces at a cheap rate bcuz they were deemed excess by the germans.

Pardon my ignorance but dont we manufacture our own APCs tallah is the name i assume. Why from germany? Even if they come under some sort of military aid and besides what significance does an APC holds that will convince the pakistanies to hold back from the peace accord. I assume that the peace in the tribal area which inturn can gurrantee peace in the rest of pakistan is something far more valuable then getting few APCs.
I just have this hunch that F-16s will be next on the list.

I think these APC were coming for FC, under agreed terms of war on terror. It was US military assistance for Pakistan for war on terror.
Soon will be F16 lolzzz

Based on what I know, its simply a matter of production capacity. Pakistan would be able to get 800 M113s in one fell swoop from the Germans. Producing these in Pakistan from NKs (knocked down kits) would take much more time.

Also keep in mind that instead of US, maybe its the German government's way of putting pressure on Pakistan as they too have troops in Afghanistan.

Dear Blain2,

Belive you me or not its nothing to be emotional its something which happens every now n then but they dont take the lesson and keep on relying the same so called friend. I believe the standard policy is 3 sticks and then a carrot but in Pakistan's case it loos like more like dozen sticks and a half carrot.hahahahaha

Anyway we dont need these APCs, they must not maon for these meagre things.:cheesy::pakistan:

. . .
They are being used. However as I mentioned, it takes time to produce these locally.

50/year. that is becoming a issue. similarly the AK production is 50/year. by the way i cannot find another source to confirm this news of APCs being blocked by the US - so i am starting to question the authenticity of this source.

.
i read this on PAKDEF one of the guys was saying that most of these APCs have been delivered so i dont think that this is such a big deal.

.
YOu all keep saying APC but which one is it? Is it the M-113 or some other kind of APC maybe something newer???
