US backs China & Russia, blow to Indian UNSC dream

China's significance i guess was more of being of service to the Allies by providing bases etc in beating the Japs rather then China itself winning any part of WW2. Rest of the countries i agree.

Personally i find this permanent member security council archaic and outdated. I would rather India strive to make this 5 member council as a rotating table kind of thing, where a much larger pool of countries get a turn, rather than trying to add itself to this exclusive list.
outdated it is, but with almost half the world's population here (ind/china is almost 40%).. not likely to happen, but I'd like to see an asian economic and military combine sometime in the future.

too bad we're all fighting with each other :P

What about Indonesia? Why no Muslim voice in the UNSC? And what about South America and Afirca? What a sick joke.

Then you should correct him with your own facts. That's the nature of debate. Calling people names is what actually descends such important to the gutter.

corrected them for countless times with proper debate,but in every thread it'll be the same..

see the post no #44 and what I've posted in #35..possibly you'll understand.

That's a fair point, but the East is covered by China. As for technology, the West isn't stuck stuck in time. They are also progressing, so this whole talk of "catch up" is speculative at best.

The west isn't stuck, but their demographics is shrinking and becoming old, so east has a chance. Moreover a good economics support R&D. Take the example of China. Just compare its research papers now to 10 years ago. India too has increased its research budget manifold. Just 10 years ago it was a dream for even to think India will go to moon and mars, but with economic progress the industrial capability of India too grew and the moon and mars mission became reality.

But I guess 2/3rd of the members should support.

But that for non permanent members of UNSC for the period of 2 years.

In accordance with Article 23 of the Charter, as amended, [By an amendment dated 17 December 1963 (resolution 1991 A (XVIII)), which came into force on 31 August 1965, the General Assembly increased the number of non-permanent members of the Security Council from 6 to 10. The Security Council consists of five permanent members (China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and United States of America) and 10 non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly for a term of two years. In accordance with rule 142 of the rules of procedure, the General Assembly elects each year five non-permanent members of the Security Council. At its eighteenth session, in 1963, the Assembly decided that the non-permanent members of the Council should be elected according to the following pattern (resolution 1991 A (XVIII)):

  1. Five from African and Asian States;
  2. One from Eastern European States;
  3. Two from Latin American States;
  4. Two from Western European and other States.
At its sixty-first session, the General Assembly elected five non-permanent members of the Security Council (decision 61/402) [page 4]. At present, the Council is thus composed of the following 15 Member States.

As stipulated in rule 144 of the rules of procedure, a retiring member is not eligible for immediate re-election. In accordance with rule 92 of the rules of procedure, the election is held by secret ballot and there are no nominations. Under rule 83 of the rules of procedure, the non-permanent members of the Security Council are elected by a two-thirds majority. The names of the States that have served as non-permanent members of the Security Council are listed in annex IV.

It can be Egypt, Turkey and even Indonesia.

Good point.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait give multi-billion dollars business to US military.

Those are despotic regimes that have no place in any international organization.

It can be Egypt, Turkey and even Indonesia.

I would prefer Iran, because the world needs countries opposed to Western hegemony. Not more vassal states.

Good post, and I agree. India has done a good job of making itself an important country. It should just carry on. This P5 business is a major distraction.

Well IMO this whole perma UNSC thing (even though it was started in congress era) has more to do with Modi's India .A permanent seat of UNSC will be the finest feather on his cap of achievements and hence we are ever more serious about getting it right now when we should have been focusing on our internal problems.

Their demographics are shrinking, but they are still advancing, and the decline in demographics is partially due to the high standard of living they enjoy, through increased use of technology.
