US Apologizes to Pakistan For Salala Attack

pakistan did not actually needed an apology from U.S , what they needed was press glory. just like when they released raymond davis.

People shouldn't jump to any hasty conclusions. This is merely the headline, the finer details are still at large. I seriously doubt that Pakistan will simply yield after holding off so long in exchange for some meaningless words. Expect a massive outbreak of foot-in-mouth on PDF in the coming days.

Welcome development, IMO.
1) Yes, this is not the same as saying 'We are sorry to have killed your soldiers unprovoked' but it took seven months to use 'sorry' in a diplomatic way which saves Obama some face during the tough electioneering year while Pakistan gets some financial (and quite possibly military) assistance through IMF etc
2) I had doubts about the Northern route but didn't realize that Americans were THAT desperate to have the route opened through Pakistan. Obviously, bravado aside, the $100 million/month through NDN at Putin's mercy, was a major pain for NATO.
3) It remains to be see what else has been offered to Pakistan. I really doubt that Pakistan--who has the upper hand momentarily--would have accepted this semi-apology without getting something in return. On the fact of it, the charges are still $250 (or $500) per truck but THAT's for American domestic consumption--after all, Clinton had to sell this semi-apology and so hastened to add that Pakistan is not asking for any extra charges.
4) It should prove, once and for all, that Pakistani leadership--whether military or civilian is not a 'puppet'. In order to pressurize Pakistan all kind of dirt and threats were heaped upon Pakistan in public; hate to think what was said in private. But some Pakistanis are just too pathetic when they use 'puppet' or 'lapdog' to describe the Pakistani govt. Pakistan is a much, much weaker party but it is still sovereign. Has always been.
5) I think something must have happened between J.Allen and Kayani when they met a few days ago. I think THAT's where perhaps the ice was broken.
6) Shouldn't it be in Pakistan's interest to see Nato leaving Afghanistan as soon as possible and in as large numbers as possible? Open the route and let them out...

Panetta wont be a happy man
he might take it on the tribal gathering like a wedding, funeral or a festival to express his frustration like previous drone strikes
there is nothing to celebrate
hope this war ends soon

This war will continue until dollar is the reserve currency. Just change the name from Afghan war to some other war against some other dysfunctional muslim state. It baffles me how a broke nation can fight.

I am betting all hopes on China, that by the time 2020 arrives, they have significant enough Navy and Air power and then they dump US dollar and make America live in Pain.

The same papers proclaimed WMD's in Iraq and complicity of Pakistan in terrorism.. Dont believe all that you read in the news papers..

btw, you didnt answer me about the actual text of the statement.. Here.. Let me help a bit :)

I once again reiterated our deepest regrets for the tragic incident in Salala last November. I offered our sincere condolences to the families of the Pakistani soldiers who lost their lives. Foreign Minister Khar and I acknowledged the mistakes that resulted in the loss of Pakistani military lives. We are sorry for the losses suffered by the Pakistani military. We are committed to working closely with Pakistan and Afghanistan to prevent this from ever happening again.

And as I said before, it this is a good enough apology for Pakistan, Good for you..... :)
These same guys will dismiss every news item from west as propaganda.. Now since they say it is an Apology they are happily consuming it.

It should be noted that when ever in future if someone asks you did US really give an apology, they will have naught to show for.

If Pakistan wants to take it as an apology nobody can say otherwise, their decision.. I hope they do not start rusting US for a statement's sake.

It is only to satisfy the mass populace which this time around would have created havoc if Pakistan would have opened the supply lines without a fight..

one can interpret it anyways it want, as long as the GLOC's are being opened, U.S should be fine with it as well as pakistan. anways from the department of state press release, they feel sorry for the american military losses. just like they feel sorry for the drone attack deaths. but anyways it's all about making fool of pakistan public, including some of the readers of this forum. it just confirms that all pakistan needs is press glory.

Statement by Secretary Clinton on her Call With Pakistani Foreign Minister Khar

A Western reporter once wrote, Indians wanted to be assured of a Kargil victory and their frivolous media provided them this victory. Victims of your own makings, you dare not think other wise.

First you had a problem with the acute wordings and now suddenly TOI has dawned upon you.

If any body, it's you who needs some help in digesting this news, but then you are keen to digress, none the less, guess what, the party that does matter feels the pain for apologising......now work on some other equation only to comfort your self.

Panetta was apparently underplaying the costs - recent reports indicate that the 7 month blockade have cost the US an additional $2.1 Billion - the $100 million additional per month figure would have put the additional cost at around $700 million - the two figures are not even close.

And thats why Pakistan blocked NATO supplies for almost an year? get over it boy.... i know its burning ur intestines... but thts just the reality... surely reminds u guys how important PAKISTAN is...

Just to bring in India every time is not a good escape route for one's incompetence.

Now you are going as far as the Fox News too, I guess it was agreed even in PDF that FOX is full of crap!

The majority of the US media is calling it an apology, which is basically what it is, arguments over semantics aside - but of course that will never be enough for the Pakistan haters (Indians) and ultra-nationalists, and in some cases those in between as well.

It seems that you consider a guy who is basing his argument on the material becomes a Pakistani hater, anyways who can stop you from what you think.

Since the tough stand of Pakistan was known to only abate if there was an apology, the western media is correct in their assessment of the scenario. However, this seem more like a mass populace propaganda at best to tame down the Pakistani people's demand to keep the supplies closed and maintain status. It is on Pakistan to see what it feels appropriate, whether a clear worded statement or not.

However, it is also of note that the impasse has ended and things can normalize a bit, US intervention in this region is not good for India too.
