Becasue this platform wss inducted a long time ago, maintenance setup is already there (no extra time or expense for new setup), fighter's use strategy in various roles is already in place, trained drivers are already available, technical staff is available, weapons are already available, integrated and tested, etc., etc., and all these things make it a lot more cost effective and efficient than inducting a new platform like J-10B, even if that costs less per unit.

Inducting a new platform is effective only when inducted in large numbers, inducting 100 J-10B's would make sense, but if we are looking at only 14-20 jets, then going with Falcons is wiser and gives more bang for the buck.

They are only talking about upgrades not selling F-16’s to Pakistan.

J10 B is still on test field but there is nothing to worry about the progress is very fast & yes PAF I believe is thinking about to get a good amount of J10 B to increase the number of Fighter Jets in PAF & PAF wants to get rid of all the old stuff.

I hope PAF is working on twin engine Fighter Jets.

ISLAMABAD: US Ambassador Richard Olson and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt on Monday reviewed Pakistan’s F-16 programme. Ambassador Olson reaffirmed the importance of a strong US-Pakistan security relationship during an exchange of ideas with Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt. Both sides affirmed their mutual commitment to a strong defence relationship which they agreed should focus on achieving common objectives. Ambassador Olson and the air chief marshal reviewed the Pakistani F-16 programme and visited the home of Pakistan’s F-16s, at PAF Base Shahbaz.

“This visit, and the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) F-16 programme itself, represent concrete examples of US-Pakistan cooperation to support our shared security goals and to promote peace and stability in the region,” said Ambassador Olson. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt welcomed the US ambassador and said, “Ambassador Olson’s visit is important because it focuses on achieving common objectives and it shows the US and Pakistan working together to strengthen cooperation to support each country’s security interests.”

The PAF has been flying F-16s since the early 1980s. In 2008, the PAF bought the advanced Block 52 model using national funds. The plane has all-weather day/night precision targeting capability. The US Foreign Military Assistance programme is helping the PAF upgrade its fleet of older F-16 aircraft to match these new capabilities. With their state-of-the-art ability to support Pakistan’s counter-terror efforts, these aircraft are the backbone of the PAF. staff report.

US Ambassador calling on the Air Chief at AHQ is one thing but accompanying him to visit Shahbaz Air Base does point to some significant developments.... obviously the Block-52s are stationed there but is the in-house MLU also carried out at the same.??

There is a problem in payment of soft loans as there is no cash.. The Chinese are willing to defer those and offer new ones, but the PAF intends to keep a much longer term relationship with China and hence prefers to keep goodwill intact.
When it comes to the US, the transaction is different since the PAF knows it has a timetable where it can get the most out of the US for itself...at least in terms of brand new equipment. So its trying to use all means to get equipment.. and identify alternative means of obtaining the most important spares since sources are now becoming available as the F-16 reaches its product life cycle end.

Upgraded where? In US? If that happens good luck if they don't freeze the return of those F-16's. Pakistan should limit the F-16 program for now, best to move onto a new platform, one that is non-US.


Other options available JF-17 II or J-10B.

In Turkey, its easier.. and more reliable..
The F-16 is one platform the PAF knows how to fight very very well with, and hence the wish to get more of them to be able to build up a capability as soon as possible.

Ummm I would probably say they are desperate for the best the money can buy across the globe. Aid is a separate word, I don't think I have to explain this on the forum.

Well the thing is everyone knows about the life cycle costs of the AL 31 engine but the WS 10A is still yet to get it's IOC...and AL 31 is already been flying for decades...so it would be a better choice instead of the WS 10 A

WE PAID FOR EVERY F-16 we own and the ones that USA never delievered in 1992 embargo! we also paid for ALL UPGRADES of the fighters!!!

US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson met Pakistan Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt at Air Headquarters in Islamabad to discuss the country's F-16 programme.

According to a statement by the PAF, "various areas of further cooperation" were also discussed. After the meeting, the US Ambassador accompanied the PAF Chief on a visit to Shahbaz airbase where he was given an on-site briefing of the F-16 programme.

Sources in the PAF said that the US Ambassador discussed the refurbishing of 45 F-16 jets by Turkish Aerospace Industries, under a deal that was signed in 2010. In 2012, 3 upgraded F-16 jets were already delivered to Pakistan.

Besides the F-16s, Ambassador Olson also discussed a mid-life upgrade of older combat jets in the Pakistan Air Force fleet.

A statement by the US Embassy in Islamabad read: "Both sides affirmed their mutual commitment to a strong defence relationship which they agreed should focus on achieving common objectives".

This discussion was held under the pretext of the US Foreign Military Assistance programme.
