NEW YORK: With memories of the 9/11 attacks etched in the psyche of New Yorkers, city police say they give particular attention to Urdu and Bengali speakers when they eavesdrop in restaurants and stores to gather information on terrorists.

Commanding officer of the New York Police Department's elite intelligence division Thomas Galati said he has keen interest in Urdu-speaking New Yorkers.

"I'm seeing Urdu," assistant chief Galati said of the data generated by his eight-person demographics unit, which has eavesdropped on thousands of conversations between Muslims in restaurants and stores in New York City and New Jersey and on Long Island.

"I'm using that information for me to determine that this would be a kind of place that a terrorist would be comfortable in."

"A potential terrorist could hide in here," Galati was quoted as saying by the New York Times.

"Most Urdu speakers would be of concern." Nearly 80,000 New Yorkers, mostly of Pakistani and Indian descent, speak Urdu.

Galati also turned to those New Yorkers -- perhaps another 20,000 or 30,000 -- who speak Bengali.

Galati said that those who speak Bengali would also get the same attention from city police officials.

"The fact that they are speaking Bengali is a factor I would want to know," he said, adding that the information was used solely to be able to determine where "I should face a threat of a terrorist and that terrorist is Bengali."

Galati, however, said that compiling of Urdu-and Bengali-and Arabic-language hangouts and eavesdropping had not resulted in tips about potential terrorist plots.

"I could tell you that I have never made a lead from rhetoric that came from a demographics report," Galati was quoted as saying by the paper.

Top police officials say that the 9/11 Commission found that six of the 2001 attackers lived in Paterson, New Jersey as that city had an Arabic-speaking community.

I think there should be some effort from the Indian embassy to educate people about the difference between Hindi and Urdu.

These law enforcement people may confuse the Hindi with Urdu and harass innocent people. I don't wanna be monitored with terrorists just because we sound similar.:hitwall:

Oh well..
Keeps them busy..or they will get bored...

well they'll need a lot of ears and eyes then...it just so happens that Pakistanis and Bengalis dominate the "gift shop" industry especially in touristic areas in and around Broadway Ave, Times Square, etc.

they run restaurants, they run bridal shops, corner convenience stores -- many are white collar bankers, venture capitalists, property agents, etc.

Hell -- there is Jackson Heights and Astoria..there's Brighton Beach in Brooklyn -- all DOMINATED by Pakistanis/Urdu speakers. Coney Island is known throughout New York as "Little Pakistan".....so like i said -- they'll need a LOT of ears and eyes lol

Pakistanis (and im sure bengalis as well) have done well in New York City.....you will never see them being lazy, sitting unemployed collecting state benefits

and most certainly they are law abiding and doing very well in life.....how do i know? Because i've witnessed it myself, and a good friend of mine is an entrepreneur who owns a clothing line, print shops, etc....he creates jobs in New York, New Jersey AND Pakistan (india too). How many people can brag about that?

he aint no extremist, he HATES even to discuss political things

spying on these people is a total waste of resources, manpower and money

p.s. I met a retired Pakistani naval officer who is now a high ranking official in the NYPD...there are Pakistanis in law enforcement as well (including DHS)

The USA should keep an eye on the south Asians with extremist views and nationalities.

is this to promote Urdu..well gudluck nypd

Post some neutral source, please.

P.S. TOI....13t news should be banned on PDF.

BTW if this news is truth than Pakistani community have a right to protest against it, US Laws says you cannot discriminate against any indivisual/certain community.

Just a nonsensical media stunt. They should monitor CIA headquarters for latest information on all malicious plots.
