In Pakistan, around 64% energy is produced via thermal power projects. The electricity is generated in these projects by burning fuels, which is not only damaging for the environment but also resource-intensive.

With depleting fossil fuel reserves and ever increasing oil prices, renewable energy is without a doubt the future of energy independence in Pakistan.

Solar power is not as big in Pakistan yet, but to cater to the increasing demand of energy, the University of Central Punjab (UCP) has installed a solar power plant in its premises.

According to the university, this is one of Pakistan's largest grid–tied solar power plant in the education sector.

University of Central Punjab Lahore has installed .5mgwt solar power facility for self consumption..great initiative..off grid solar power is cheap, clean & with reverse metering it generates income too..

The initiative of installing the 0.5 MW grid-tied solar power plant has seen the UCP make its way on to the list of Green League Universities, UK. It will also take the Punjab Group of Colleges one step closer to becoming Pakistan’s largest chain of green energy based educational institutions.

The installation of the plant was commissioned and completed in a record period of 3 months, and as a result, the university will now be able to produce 710 Mwh power per annum.

This will also reduce carbon emissions by 392 tonnes every year.

A new chapter of collaboration with Premier Energy was also organised, and Pro Rector UCP, Prof Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah formally inaugurated the plant at the university. The inauguration ceremony was followed by a panel discussion where eminent personalities from the energy sector highlighted the significance and potential of renewable energy resources. Additionally, a walk was also organised in favour of the green initiative.

.
Excellent decision and congratulations to the admin / faculty on taking such a wise step. I hope other institutions follow their foot steps.

A country like Pakistan which gets 300+ days of sun in a year should be building solar plants in every gully khucha..... but noooooo our visionary leaders are focusing on coal :hitwall:

Here in Canada they have winter for 5 months a year with very little sunlight but they are building solar plants on a war footing.

i wish Pakistan builds a factory for making solar panels so that cost can be reduce by not importing it from out side.. they should make it available to public very cheap so that more people adopt it and reduce weight on National power grids and save electricity for later years...
