Kabul: The United Arab Emirates says five of its diplomats were killed in a bombing in Kandahar, Afghanistan, the previous day.

The UAE said today it will fly the nation's flags at half-mast in their honour.

Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE's prime minister and vice president, said on Twitter that "there is no human, moral or religious justification for the bombing and killing of people trying to help" others.

Afghan officials previously said the blast killed five people and wounded 12. Among the wounded were Kandahar Gov. Homayun Azizia, as well as UAE Ambassador Juma Mohammed Abdullah al-Kaabi.

The Taliban issued a statement today saying they did not plant the bomb, instead blaming an "internal local rivalry" for the attack.

Five officials from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were among the dead in a bombing in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, the Emirates’ official WAM news agency said on Wednesday.

The officials were “on a mission to carry out humanitarian, educational and development projects”, the news agency said.

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered three days of mourning “in honour of the martyrs who gave their lives in defence of humanitarian causes”, it added.

The blast, which struck the provincial governor’s office during a visit by the UAE delegation, was one of a string of bombings that hit three Afghan cities on Tuesday, killing some 50 people and wounding 100.

The carnage underscores growing insecurity in Afghanistan, where US-backed forces are struggling to combat a resilient Taliban insurgency as well as Al-Qaeda and Islamic State militants.

Kandahar’s governor and UAE envoy Juma Mohammed Abdullah Al Kaabi were wounded by flames from the explosion, but many others were burned beyond recognition, provincial police chief Abdul Raziq told AFP.

He said a dozen people were killed and an equal number wounded. No militant group has so far claimed responsibility.

Taliban insurgents have escalated their campaign of violence in Afghanistan in recent days, even as winter takes hold.

The assault on the UAE delegation was unusual. In the past the Emirates have had good relations with the Taliban.

When the militant group held power in Kabul between 1996 and 2001, Abu Dhabi was one of just three governments that recognised it.

A brazen attack on UAE diplomats in the Afghan city of Kandahar has triggered speculation of a possible link to the upcoming visit of UAE crown prince Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade.

The attack on Tuesday night killed 11 people, including five diplomats from the United Arab Emirates, and injured the country’s envoy to Kabul, Juma Mohammed Abdullah Al Kaabi.

Afghan commentators were quick to note that the attack came days before Al Nahyan is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi to participate in the Republic Day celebrations. There is tremendous symbolism attached to the visit as a contingent from the UAE Armed Forces will march with Indian troops during the Republic Day parade.

The UAE has strengthened security and defence cooperation with India in recent years. Since late 2015, some 10 Indian supporters of the Islamic State have been deported by the UAE. This enhanced cooperation is believed to have caused heartburn in Islamabad.

The Taliban, which has a strong presence in Kandahar, a province that once served as the capital of the militant group, have told the Afghan media that they had no role in Tuesday night’s attack. Commentators also noted that the UAE was one of only three countries to recognise the Taliban government in the 1990s.

Kandahar’s police chief Gen Abdul Raziq on Wednesday accused the Pakistan-based Haqqani Network and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency of plotting the deadly attack. Former National Directorate of Security (NDS) chief Amrullah Saleh said on Twitter that an investigation would show a Pakistani link to the attack.

“The possible involvement of the ISI in this attack cannot be ruled out. The ISI has often used attacks in Afghanistan as a sort of messaging towards India,” said an Indian security official who did not want to be named.

This would not be the first time that Pakistan-backed militants have targeted India or India-related interests in Afghanistan. In May 2014, militants attacked the

Indian consulate in Herat three days before the swearing-in of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Though the attackers, believed to be from the Lashkar-e-Taiba, were killed, officials later said they had intended to take hostages at the consulate in a bid to embarrass Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who attended the inauguration in New Delhi.

In January last year, terrorists tried to storm the Indian consulate in Mazar-e-Sharif at about the same time that Jaish-e-Mohammed operatives struck the Indian airbase at Pathankot. The attackers in Mazar-e-Sharif left messages scrawled in blood before they were killed, one of which read “Revenge for Afzal Guru”.

Guru was convicted and executed for his role in the 2001 Parliament attack that too was blamed on JeM.

Even by the standards of a country that saw hundreds killed in terror attacks last year, Tuesday was a particularly brutal day for Afghanistan. Besides the attack in Kandahar, suicide attackers struck near a NDS office in Lashkargah and outside the Parliament in Kabul, killing a total of 45 people.

The provincial police chief of the southern Kandahar province General Abdul Raziq has said notorious Haqqani terrorist network with the support of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) were behind the deadly attack on governor’s compound.

Speaking during a press conference, Gen. Raziq said the Haqqani network and ISI were working since a long period of time to target the provincial leadership.

Without elaborating further, Gen. Raziq said they had received reports regarding a possible attack on government compounds.

The Taliban militants group denied involvement in the attack and blamed the officials for having internal disputes and accused them of plotting and carrying out the explosion.

The provincial governor along with several other high level government officials were killed in the explosion.

Five UAE diplomats were also killed in the attack and the country’s ambassador to Afghanistan was wounded.

In the meantime, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has instructed the relevant institutions to thorough investigate the incident.

The Office of the National Security Council (NSC) also announced the National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif arrived in Kandahar today to investigate the incident, leading a delegation of government officials for the probe

The Afghan parliament confirmed that 36 employees of the parliament including secretariat of the Lower House of the Parliament, Wolesi Jirga, and some workers of the Upper House were killed in yesterday’s coordinated suicide attack.

Dozens of other were also wounded in the attack which took place close to the parliament building.

The Afghan officials earlier said at least 38 people were killed and over 70 others were wounded in the attack.

According to the officials, the incident took place after a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives close to the parliament and another explosion followed as people had gathered in the incident area.

The officials also added that four policemen also lost their lives in the attack and at least four others were wounded.

The Taliban group claimed responsibility behind the incident.

The United States NSC Spokesperson Ned Price strongly condemned the attack in Kabul and other provinces, including Kandahar.

“The United States strongly condemns the terrorist attack on Parliamentary buildings in Kabul today that killed at least 38 Afghans and wounded more than 70. An attack on Parliamentary facilities and lawmakers is clearly an assault on Afghanistan’s efforts to build democratic institutions,” a statement released by the US Embassy said.

The statement further added “We also strongly condemn the terrorist attack today in Kandahar that killed at least seven people and wounded 18, including the United Arab Emirates’ Ambassador to Afghanistan and several Emirati diplomatic personnel, and the suicide bomb attack in southern Helmand province today that killed at least seven Afghans, including both civilian and military personnel.”

“We commend the Afghan police and other security forces who bravely responded to these attacks, and fully support Afghan efforts to bring those responsible to justice. The United States stands with the people and Government of Afghanistan as we work together to build a more secure, stable, and prosperous Afghanistan,” the statement added.

The Office of the President, ARG Palace, condemned the attack on strongest words and said enemies of Afghanistan targeted governor, UAE Ambassador, and some civilians in a terrorist attack.

A statement by ARG said the UAE Ambassador had visited the province for humanitarian support and inauguration of Al-Nahyan foundation.

President Ghani said the enemies of the stability and development of Afghanistan cannot harm the will and confidence of the Afghan people for development and prosperity of the country.

He said the attack will also not harm the bilateral relations between Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE authorities confirmed Wednesday that five diplomats were killed in the attack and the country’s ambassador was wounded.

The Taliban group rejected responsibility behind the attack.

Response to UAE army coming to take part in India's Republic Day

The blame game has already begun. UAE is a friend of Pakistan compared to Afghanistan. There is no logic for the ISI to attack them. Most likely the attack is from Afghan intelligence. We all know they blame the arab world as well as Pakistan for the terrorism emanating from their very own soil. Afghans should introspect and ask questions about why their society is in such a mess. Every strand of sympathy I have for this country, pashtun or not is slowly going away. With this blame game one day Afghans will have no single ally.

On one hand you talk about logic and on other hand you give an illogical statement. Are you saying AF killed foreign diplomats on their own soil just to malign Pakistan? You do understand the repercussions for AF after this attack?? Do you think even Pakistan would like to send their diplomats to AF given their security failed UAE big time??

If you have to make such a theory then atleast push it on RAW or some other intelligence agencies...no??
