First of all i would never believe the figure of 17 lakhs Ph.D student applying for job of peon as seems more than exaggerated.Secondly main reason of creating this thread is to ask the concerned that though there is problem of unemployment everywhere esp in Pakistan also but why is that when so many companies are responding to Make in India venture and India's economy reportedly has been on A/B then why are so many of the highly educated guys still unemployed in India? I have not taken into account the uneducated lot in that. Again i would say that either this news is exaggerated but if the numbers are even a lil less but still whats actually going on there?

What is even more shocking is the fact among the people who have applied, 201 have completed their Doctorate degree and around 20,000 have Master's degree in various disciplines. As many as 8 lakh people have completed their high school qualification, as well.

I doubt India has even produced 17lakh phd twisting heading to attract attention freaking presstitute.

Ok...That's a very valid question. Let me try to explain from what I know about this.

The number "17 lakh Phd students" is wrong. There were a total of 17 lakh applications among which around may be 200 were Phd students. That site did not do any proof-checking.

Even then 200 candidates with Phds, applying for a peon job is not something normal. However, this is UP we are talking about. A peon in a government service anywhere in India carries upwards of 2000 to 3000 bucks everyday in bribe money got(over and above his monthly salary+perks). An officer in a particular govt. office can get bribes only from people who visit him for a task. But a peon in a govt. office is the go-to guy for everything concerned with these officers. If he has to act as a broker for every single person who is visiting this office irrespective of who the person is visiting, the peon simply becomes the one with the most customers. And UP is one such place where almost everybody pays a bribe and almost every govt. officer takes a bribe. There are peons who have earned in crores, especially if they work at Customs dept.(central govt) or at Collectorates, Public Works dept., State Electricity boards (these are real gold mines).

Source: I have seen first hand how things move in a Customs office. The peon is the first guy someone would contact in such an office. Sometimes, even if the officer does not take bribes, the peon still gets the bribes in his name. I've known a guy whose dad worked as the secretary for a district collector. This guy was always driving posh sedans (he had 2 for his use), ate only at the best restaurants and stuff. Somethings he definitely could not have afforded from his dad's actual salary.

it is because of the love for gov. job. you will get promotion after a departmental test. my friend is a LDC clerk. he got Phd in mathematics. and he was working as an professor in a college at the time he attend the PSC exam for LDC clerk post.

The headline is obviously loony. The article talks about 200 doctorate holders applying. I have no idea of why there are so many takers for this job, maybe it has something to do with being a government post. It is well known that U.P. & Bihar are problem states when it comes to jobs, which is why so many of them migrate to other states. There is definitely work available if one wants to do it (maybe not necessarily in the field one has chosen for his/her masters or Ph.d), if they are willing to work (as they seem to suggest they do, or maybe they think they don't have to work given the state of administration in U.P.) The fact that they remain there could indicate some lack of desire to actually work..

Even if, for the arguments sake, they were 10,000 PhD candidates who are applying for a peon job, don't you think, this is something where Modi should thump his fake "56 inches" chest, instead of war mongering with neighbors?

I thought about this part(since my cousin who gave up her high paying MNC offer, joined SBI as a probationary officer and got promoted to Manager within a year), but I was unsure whether peons were eligible for the test. Now that you've confirmed this, then the whole story has a very different ring to it.

Plz read complete thread before vomiting garbage. Time and again i had put doubt on numbers quoted in article. Had i posted everything from the article then what was fun in posting the link. And yes i have no doubt but am 300% sure if at all there are 17 lakh PhDs in India.

But this is injustice to offer a low quality job to a highly educated, only a high school or maybe maybe a college graduate deserves to have that job

if the applicant doesn't have any problem with that then what is the problem??
BTW, the minimum educational qualification for a peon post is high school.

Its just a logical thing to do, if you hire PHds for peon job then what will you do with high school only qualified. by the way this was in Canada anyone with a college degree will be flat out rejected as being over qualified
