The concrete beams being placed for the Gohati Bridge on Swabi-Mardan road suddenly collapsed here on Wednesday.

Local people said the bridge was part of the much-awaited road widening project which had been under construction since 2019.

They said that two beams were already placed and the incident of bridge collapse occurred when the workers placed the third one on the site with the help of cranes. No worker was injured in the incident.

“As we were placing the third beam on the prepared set-up the bridge suddenly collapsed, leading to stoppage of the work,” said a worker while requesting anonymity.



Leaders of the opposition parties and local people have criticised the ruling party for what they called the use of substandard material in the construction of the road and bridges.

They said the cost of Swabi-Mardan road was Rs10 billion and it was being labelled as a great achievement of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leaders.

Mukhtiar Khan, former adviser to chief minister, said the bridge collapse had exposed the corrupt practices of the ruling party leaders.

Former MPA Babar Saleem said that each kilometre of this road cost about Rs240 million, but it seemed that corrupt practices had made the entire exercise futile.

Other opposition leaders said they would run a campaign against the use of substandard material in reconstruction and widening of the Swabi-Mardan road.

This correspondent tried to contact local PTI leaders for their comments, but they did not attend the call. However, one of the employees quoted the relevant contractor as saying that the placing of the last beam from a wrong angle caused the collapse of the bridge.

KILLED: A man allegedly killed his wife and minor daughter over a domestic issue in Hund village, said SHO Chota Lahor city police station Jawad Khan on Wednesday.

The SHO said that according to information Salman Khan and his wife exchanged hot words over some domestic issue. The man allegedly opened fire on his wife, who was also holding her one and a half years daughter in her arms. Both received bullet injuries and died on the spot.

The police registered an FIR and have started investigation.

Construction accident occurr all the time. Issue will be when the client (State of Pakistan) accept a faulty product.

Corruption is corruptions. Citric acid is still considered an acid despite the fact that we enjoy it in lemons and oranges.

It was a construction incident. One of the bridge pillars slipped and fell on rest of the bridge, collapsing it. Ask ADB to check if it was case of corruption since they are the creditors here


I meant sarcastically. Construction accidents happen all over Pakistan every day. You are gonna blame Imran Khan for them too?

I didn’t say it was corruption, build how bridges are built. Even when there is no corruption, bridges and other infrastructure can be poorly designed. The statement that this was supposedly just human error does allay some worry, but prudence dictates that this should be throughly investigated, as part of the insurance claim, so that steps can be taken to reduce the chances this happens again and to strengthen the culture of accountability and public confidence in these projects and by extension the government.

Bridge collapses in US city before Biden visit to tout infrastructure needs​

A two-lane bridge in Pittsburgh collapsed on Friday hours ahead of a visit by US President Joe Biden to the Pennsylvania city, a dramatic example of the urgency behind his drive to rebuild the United States' creaky infrastructure.

Ten people sustained injuries, all of them minor, when the snow-covered span collapsed into a wooded gully at about 6am (1100 GMT), according to authorities.

The collapse also caused a massive natural gas leak, which prompted the temporary evacuation of several families from their homes until it was brought under control, Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones said at a news conference.

“It sounded like a snowplow,” a witness told television station KDKA, calling the timing of the collapse on the day of Biden's visit “an amazing coincidence.”

Biden was told of the bridge incident and will proceed with his trip as planned, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. The White House was in touch with state and local officials about the collapse, she added.

The incident was a high-profile example of the need to rebuild the country's aging bridges, highways and other infrastructure with money from a $1 trillion spending bill that was a signature achievement of Biden's first year in office.

A photo posted on social media by KDKA showed several vehicles piled in the rubble of the collapsed roadway at the bottom of a wooded gully.


At least one vehicle, which appeared to be a bus, was dangling at the edge of part of the bridge. A strong smell of gas permeated the area, Pittsburgh Public Safety said in a Twitter message.


Pennsylvania has 3,198 bridges rated as being in poor condition, according to the US Department of Transportation.
