ULFA paid $99 mn bribe for arms' passage in B'desh

DHAKA: An Indian militant group and the embassy of a South Asian country bribed "higher-ups" in the former Khaleda Zia government to ensure safe passage of a huge arms cache that landed in Chittagong port in April 2004, a former minister has told investigators.

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), operating in northeast India, had teamed with the embassy that was not named, to pay Taka 7 billion ($99.4 million) for transshipment of 10 truckloads of arms, ammunition and explosives, said detained former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar.

Babar was "in the know of things" but was helpless as there were orders from "higher-ups", he told officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), reported The Daily Star on Thursday.

Babar, a minister in the Zia government (2001-06), did not name the South Asian embassy.

Ten truckloads of submachine guns, AK-47 assault rifles, other firearms and bullets were seized at the Karnaphuli coast in Chittagong April 2, 2004.

The cache, detected by guards at a warehouse where it was hidden, was meant for the ULFA that was then staging violent attacks from Bangladeshi soil, media reports on the ongoing trial in a Chittagong court have said.

The arms, purchased from China, were brought in a ship owned by a company belonging to Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury, a lawmaker and senior leader of Zia-led Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Officials have so far questioned a former home secretary, two former chiefs of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and a former Director General of Field Intelligence (DGFI).

The NSI and DGFI are key intelligence agencies in Bangladesh.

Babar denied receiving any share of the amount, a CID official probing two cases filed in connection with the arms haul told the newspaper.

The former state minister claimed he knew everything but could not interfere in the matter as it was at the hands of "higher authorities", said the CID official quoting him.

"Babar remained silent when he was asked about the higher authorities," said the intelligence official.

The Sheikh Hasina government has closed down the ULFA camps, evicted many of its top leaders and facilitated their detention by Indian authorities.

Good move by the BD government. The traitor partiy's bribing scandal and anti national motives has been come out in open.. nice move indeed by the government.

.
where did they get all that money from? Individual charity funds cannot that big...

.
If Awami league government is really honest they should bring up the issue also which country and which country's supported group are creating unrest in the garments sector...

Even before that they should find out who are the real culprits behind the BDR massacre...and whether it was happened due to help from other country???

Country name not mentioned like the south asian countries name is not mentioned in the article... every body is allowed make any wild guesses!!!

.
Its shocking how BNP was openly spreading terrorism in India (and in DB for that matter, remember how khaleda zia was making fun of the 'rumor' of Banglabhai. Banglabhai was easily captured when military came to power and unceremoniously executed!).

The dalal BNP were selling their land and future for a few million dollars to foreigners! Shame.

Even before that the big question whether the 10 trucks of arms was worth 100 million??? or just a small fraction of it... who will believe such a crap that 100 million USD will be given as a bribe only for smuggling such a amount of arms....

Seems like BAL created a story now to create pressure on BNP for their recent objection against transit and raising voice against BAL....

If this 100 million USD story was known since care taker government then why this story surfaced after such a long time and specially now... and which is the source of the story...

Babar says he was helpless to refuse the transshipment. On the other hand, he may also be helpless now to say a NO to the AL investigators.

Only Allah knows the truth. If one goes through the pages, he will see that there are many inconsistencies in the NEWSPAPER stories that come up time to time since after what happened during BNP time.

One must understand that if BNP leaders had accepted bribes, then no one on earth could have stopped the transshipment to the NE. Thing is, the cache was found out and confiscated during BNP time. So, how it is possible that the BNP leaders had taken bribes?

moraly we cannot go against ULFA if not supporting them.

Such propaganda **** these days on the stupid media. $99 million dollars bribe? lol. this propagandas normally spread because the mass can't think with proper logic or ililteracy.
F*** BNP, with $99 million dollars, ULFA can get the weapons straight through india with its own help. they dont need bnp for that. and if they can bribe $99 million to bnp, they can at least pay $1 million to awami ministers and its a well known fact how money hungry this cheap turds.
The problem with babar investigation is that hes being framed for every crime during the bnp tenure. None of the cases has been proven except for possessing illegal arms.

@Al-zakir

You have given a solid proof that the Indian NE wants independence from the colonialist India, specially from the Calcutta Babus. These Hindu Babus also colonized over the Muslim Bangalis for 190 years by borrowing strength from their white British masters. These Babus were given right medicine in 1947 when the muslims took away a big chunk of land to form a separate country.

India, the champion of independence as claimed by many posters, should immediately vacate NE and Kashmir. Kashmir must be ruled by Pakistan. Shame on India for occupying NE land which is not rightfully India's. And shame on Awami League traitors who broke a muslim tradition and handed over NE leadership who took shelter in this country.

I can tell one thing. By this traitorous act, AL has sown the seed of a bigger poison tree in Assam. It is more possible that now ULFA will redouble its fight to break out of Union of India.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction - this is what Newton stated.

Solid proof lolz.u must be kidding right.ulfa is on its death bed. These r its desperate attempts to muster any help it can.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction - this is what Newton stated.

u should be thankful to goi and the people of assam for not applying the same law on bangladeshi immigrants.

So this the story of Zia's corrupt sons. If they get any chance they will sell their country. Why they don't come in country right now?

Thanks to Allah. Logic prevail.

BAL cooked up stories to demise Islamic forces to put smile on their Hindu master. Well, not going to happen so long we are around. BNP government did not do much to help ULFA. If we come back to power next time then we shall arm them to teeth. Indian will blame us even Awami league is involved so we got nothing to lose here. :smokin:
