An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), what Ukrainian authorities consider to be an Iranian made suicide drone Shahed-136, and uses by Russian forces amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, is seen in a sky over Odesa, Ukraine September 23, 2022.

Sept 23 (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Friday it would downgrade diplomatic ties with Iran over Tehran's decision to supply Russian forces with drones, a move President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called "a collaboration with evil".

Zelenskiy said a total of eight Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles had been shot down so far in the conflict.

Ukraine and the United States accused Iran of supplying drones to Russia, a charge Tehran denies.

"Today the Russian army used Iranian drones for its strikes. ... The world will know about every instance of collaboration with evil, and it will have corresponding consequences," Zelenskiy said in a late night video address.

Military authorities in southern Ukraine said in a statement they had shot down four Shahed-136 "kamikaze" unmanned aerial vehicles over the sea near the port of Odesa on Friday.

The air force said separately that for the first time it had brought down a Mohajer-6, a larger Iranian drone, the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper reported.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry earlier said the supply of drones had dealt a serious blow to bilateral relations.

"In response to such an unfriendly act, the Ukrainian side has decided to deprive the ambassador of Iran of his accreditation and also to significantly reduce the number of diplomatic staff of the Iranian embassy in Kyiv," it said in a statement on its website.

The message was handed to the acting ambassador since the permanent envoy, Manouchehr Moradi, is not currently in Ukraine.

Military experts say the drones would be useful to Russia for both reconnaissance and as loitering munitions that can bide their time in locating and engaging suitable targets.

In August, a senior U.S. administration official said Russia has faced "numerous failures" with Iranian-made drones acquired from Tehran.

It's funny that people say these Iranian drones are ineffective or that they aren't working, one of these drones flew deep into Israel and an Israeli Former head of Mossad Danny Yatom was actually quoted as saying “It was a sophisticated operation. The UAV was almost an exact replica of the U.S. drone that fell in their territory. If it had exploded somewhere in Israel, it may not have been possible to identify it as an Iranian manufactured drone.”

A series of major advances for Iranian drone development began in the early 2010s, after a successful Iranian electronic attack on a CIA-operated Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone hacked over its airspace in 2011 led to the aircraft being recovered intact and used as the basis for a series of flying wing stealth drones. The RQ-170 may well have been the stealthiest military aircraft in the world at the time, although Iranian sources claimed their domestic derivatives surpassed the U.S. original.

"The Saegheh reconnaissance aircraft and the Shahed 171 attack aircraft were earlier flying wing designs based on the RQ-170, with the former proving extremely survivable in some of the densest air defence environments on the planet when one penetrated Israeli airspace in February 2018. The aircraft evaded multiple attempts by Israel’s U.S.-made Patriot missile batteries to neutralise it, and had to be brought down by gunfire at close range where its stealth capabilities did not provide protection."

This is How Dangerous Iranian Stealth Drones Are - And Why That Could Soon Be Very Bad News For Ukraine

Former Mossad chief: We must take the Iranian threats very seriously - The Jerusalem Post

The reality is that Turkish drones are good but they have no combat experience. Maybe some limited operations against Armenia but Armenia had no defences, Iran has used its drones against Israel and Saudi which have a real AD so they know their drones actually work. Also, Iran got a big head start by hacking the RQ-170 and reverse engineering it so Iran will always be farther ahead of Turkey for a long time regardless of what people say. Also, Iran really worked on suicide drones which are effective and cheap, Turkey did not really invest at all on this so that is another reason for Russian success, Iranian drones are cheap which means they can be deployed in very large numbers, something the Ukrainians don't have with their expensive Bayrakters.

Iran denies sending drones to Russia amid Ukraine war

I can't think of any other nation, with perhaps the exception of China, where lying is the core strategy. Iran takes lying to new levels. Their whole country is run on lies. Those scumbags have never said one truthful thing.

Let's agree to disagree, we were so honest about our weapons and drones' lethality.
And who on earth does expect countries to share state's secrets?

Ofc no one will say that they are supplying weapons to Russia to fight Ukraine. If any country admits then maybe Western countries will apply sanctions on them. So countries will play under the table.

The whole world knows lying is in the DNA of Anglo-Saxon race. You are so biased.

Lying is part of human nature. Small children learn that telling the truth sometimes gets you punished. So, everyone and every nation lies to protect themselves from negative consequences. It's not something that is in the DNA of Anglo-Saxons, Chinese, Iranians or the French. It's in the DNA of human beings.

What is true, however, is that all nations should look at the Ukraine-Russia situation and ask where does justice lie. Of course, since most nations and peoples are not practicing Christians, we can't expect them to follow the Golden Rule, spoken by Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount:

"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you: do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."
